He had just returned back to the city and been here a few days in advance for the party but I wasn’t sure if he truly lived here.
He could just easily live in one of the several estates owned by the Ashford pack throughout the country, not just this city.
But I desperately hoped he would be here.
We walked up the front steps and followed voices to the main sitting room where four girls were already sprawled around on the cream sofas, laughing and chatting merrily with each other.
All of the decorations from last night were already cleared and replaced by the usual furniture. Jane’s hand found mine for half a second to steady herself.
Sandra looked up and stood immediately. “Sienna! I’m so glad you came. And you brought…”
“Jane,” I said. “My best friend.”
“Of course, come in!” She waved us forward. “Girls, this is Sienna, Aaron’s best friend, and Jane.” She gestured around the room. “These are my friends, Camille, Portia, Becca, and Lily.” she pointed at each of the girls who waved at us both.
Lily had her back to us and raised her hand without bothering to turn around to look at us.
Not that I particularly cared.
We settled into the remaining sofa space and I braced myself for the firing that was supposed to start any second. The meanness, when it came, arrived softly.
“I love that bag.” Portia said to Jane, in the tone of someone issuing a compliment shaped like a question.
“Thanks,” Jane said. “It was a gift.”
“Nice.” Portia’s smile didn’t move.
Camille tilted her head at me like she was studying me. “Your hair is so interesting. Is that texture natural?”
“Completely,” I said.
“That’s interesting.” She gave me the same artificial smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
And as if needing to contribute something, Becca leaned forward. “How long have you and Aaron been friends? Sandra mentioned you’ve known each other since you were kids?”
“Since we were about eight.” I said.

“That’s so sweet,” She said, looking from Sandra to me, “You must have been so happy for him when he and Sandra got together. It’s very selfless to watch someone you’ve been close to for that long find the right person.”
Yeah right. That was one way of calling me a pick–me.
Jane’s hand moved toward her tote bag.
“Becca, come on now” Sandra said lightly, the tone of someone applying a brake, and Becca sat back.
“I was just saying I would find it incredibly difficult to give my best friend and his girlfriend some space. So
both.” she is truly a gem for not trying to come in between you
Sandra gasped dramatically, both hands on her mouth.
“Don’t you dare imply any of that. Sienna has been Aaron’s best friend since childhood. If he trusts him for so long, I will do as well without a doubt.”
Jane looked at me miserably and whispered. “I prepared to throw direct and mean insults, not these vicious comments wrapped up in sweet compliments.”
“Relax” I tried to reassure her.
Just then Aaron walked in and my gaze automatically slid to him like it always did.
He had his hands in his pockets and his easy smile already in place.
“Who are you trusting instead of me?” Aaron asked, approaching Sandra and casually throwing his arm around her neck like he was tackling her.
“You baby” she replied and he smiled to kiss her right on the lips.
Sandra’s friends fanned themselves as Camille cooed. “Ooh, somebody’s jealous.”
Sandra gave a shy smile and Aaron finally looked up to the rest of the girls seated across the living room.
Sandra’s friends immediately straightened and leaned forward, smoothing their dresses and touching their
hair for no reason.
“Ladies, sorry couldn’t come sooner. I got caught up in work.”
Sandra took a lot of time introducing every single friend of hers and Aaron chatted with them all, giving them his attention for a few seconds before moving to the next friend.
Then he finally got to us. “Sienna. Glad you came.”
“Hey there,” I said, which conveyed absolutely nothing about whatever I had wanted to discuss with him.
Something moved through his eyes briefly. “Oh, you also brought a friend.”
I nodded, “She is Jane, the one who likes to….” I began but then suddenly Becca exclaimed.
