I looked at Elise Harrington and thought several things simultaneously, none of which I could say out loud.

Elise, to her credit, put on an expression of being mildly curious but she really couldn’t hide the unmistakable gleam in her eyes like she was some apex predator who had caught an interesting prey.

I was calculating exits and finding none of them particularly clean.

Alpha Harrington cleared his throat beside her, and slapped his thigh while getting up from his seat.

“Are you happy now?” he asked his beloved and spoiled rotten daughter who inched closer and laid her head on his shoulder dramatically.

Elise winked at me and then she arranged her expression into something wounded in the blink of an eye, turning slightly toward him with her hand at his arm.

“Not yet, dad. I was upset for weeks, he has to do some pleading.”

Alpha Harrington laughed like she had cracked the biggest joke and patted her back.

“Oh my poor Elise, nobody gets to keep you upset for so long. You should have told this to me sooner.”

She then looked at me as if enjoying the situation and sighed. “I tried talking to him on my own a second time, dad. I hoped he would be better to me the next day. Sadly he was simply awful to me.”

She took a pause for dramatic effect. “Completely dismissive, even.”

Harrington’s expression shifted to a mix of concern and surprise as he looked at me. “Really? When did this happen?”

“Oh,” Elise said, turning to look at me directly, the wounded expression still in place but her eyes doing something entirely different. “Maybe he can explain it better. Even speaking about it makes me sad.”

“Oh, absolutely. He will explain it dont you worry, dear” He patted her head soothingly and they were both looking at me now.

“I meet a great many people everyday,” I said pleasantly. “I apologize if I seemed distracted back then. I don’t always dismiss people who are worth my time”

“At the diner,” Elise said, helpfully. “You told me to…” she paused and tapped her chin as if she was having trouble recalling it, “…how did you put it? Ah, right. You asked me to fuck off.”

Harrington raised his eyebrows so much they disappeared behind his hairline.

“He did?”

“I think there may have been a misunderstanding,” I said, which was the most creative thing I’d said all

“Was it though?,” Elise asked innocently.

“I was preoccupied with something and I wouldn’t be lying if I say I wasn’t aware who I was speaking to. I apologize.” I said it to her and managed to make it sound like I meant it, which was its own achievement. “That was discourteous.”

Harrington studied me for a moment and then he put his hand on Elise’s shoulder and rubbed it once. I could see now where Elise got her arrogance from.

Her father worshipped the ground she walked on like she was his golden child.

“I’ve heard good things about you, Connor,” he said like he was giving me the benefit of doubt. “Good things from people I trust so I might give you a chance at making things right.” He looked at his daughter. “Only if she is willing to.”

Elise looked at her nails like she had been waiting for this exact moment and imagined me to crawl to my knees‘ like she had warned me.

I put on a smile on my lips even when I felt like yelling at her and realized what Sienna must have gone through with Sandra and her friends. Girls really could be petty when they wanted to.

Sienna…I hadn’t spoken to her in hours…

Harrington turned back to me. “You’ll respect her wishes,” he said like an order.

I thought about my father and how he would be absolutely pissed if I lost this deal because of my foolishness again. He had already grumbled about how the hospital was looting us with unnecessary expenditure that could be better utilized in border patrols or other trade offs.

I bit down all the angry retorts dancing on my lips and smiled pleasantly at them both.

“Of course, whatever she says” I said.

Elise’s smile returned like she had won this game and she muttered.

“Hmm, I was thinking of maybe going out for a coffee, and getting some fresh air. Maybe you could explain things like a friend instead of a potential client ….

Friend? I resisted the urge to barf.

“We can discuss everything right here in front of your father, Elsa.” I said and she looked mitted.

“The name’s Elise”

I laughed. “See, maybe I am getting old already to forget the name of such a beautiful woman.”

She jutted her chin up, desperate for more compliments. “Saying beautiful isn’t enough”

“You don’t look a day older than 25,”

She glared at me. “I am 19”

I slapped my forehead. “Perhaps, you should really go out with young men instead of twenty five year olds like me.” Then I looked at her father.

“You know the other day, I placed my keys on the bedside table and kept searching for them the entire day.”

Alpha Harrington laughed. “Haha, if you call yourself old, what am I?”

I lowered my voice to a whisper. “Father of a princess”

I said that with a mildly smug smile and Elise knew it was not a compliment.

Alas, I still had to spend the day with her.

“Have fun, both of you” Alpha Harrington laughed and then dangled his pen in front of me.

“You better get her smiling by the end of the day if you want that signature, Ashford”

“I’ll try my best” I said as he left the room and Elise looked at me, batting her eyelashes.

“So let’s get ready, shall we?”

“I am ready”

But she clicked her tongue reproachfully.

“Not yet”

She clapped her hands and the butler arrived. “Get him changed”

She ordered and then left to get changed though she already looked like she was perfectly ready to attend the King’s wedding.

An hour later, I was wearing a dark navy blue suit and seated beside Elise wearing a low neckline dress of the exact same shade.

“I know a place,” Elise said. “Its going to be fun”
