The Year I Stopped Being His novel Chapter 2

Sloane felt a suffocating wave of despair wash over her. "If I don't seek treatment, how much time do I have left?"

"I estimate... about a year."

In an instant, an icy chill seeped into her bones.

"But don't lose hope just yet," Simon said, leaning in slightly, his voice steady and calm. "Ms. Taylor, you could try transferring to Professor Foster's team for treatment."

"Professor Foster?"

Sloane echoed, her mind spinning, assuming he meant another physician at this facility.

"The new Nobel laureate, Garrison Foster!" Simon's voice filled with excitement. "You must have seen the broadcast. His team is developing a therapy using a special phagocytosing fungus to treat cancer. While the drug isn't fully completed, they've broken through the most critical technological barriers. If you can get into his program... there might just be a glimmer of hope."

It finally clicked. Simon was talking about her husband.

But...

Thinking of Garrison's perpetually cold and distant demeanor toward her, a deep sense of dread settled in Sloane's chest.

Mistaking her hesitation for a worry about connections, Simon quickly offered reassurance.

"Don't worry. Professor Foster is an alumnus of my university. He might not remember me, but I still have his contact information. He's in Stockholm receiving his award right now, but the moment he returns, I'll call him and ask for a favor," Simon explained patiently.

"That won't be necessary. Thank you, Dr. Yates," Sloane replied politely.

She could tell Simon barely knew her husband. He was just being incredibly kind.

"Actually, I'm... somewhat acquainted with him myself."

Sloane forced a light smile, feigning a relaxed tone. "Let me try reaching out to him first."
