"I'm sorry. I'm not going back."
Sloane's expression was absolutely resolute. "At this point, finding The White Microbe isn't just about me anymore. It's for the entire team."
She looked him straight in the eyes, a wave of profound sorrow washing over her features.
"Do you know that Coach Jensen was murdered?"
Garrison hadn't seen Liam Jensen with the team, so he had already assumed the worst, but hearing it out loud still hit hard.
"How... did it happen?"
Sloane shook her head slowly. "I don't know."
"He was killed by Lucas, a spy working for Knox Bio. No one actually witnessed it... We assume... he was stabbed and thrown into the freezing ocean..."
"No one knows, and no one ever will," she whispered, her face turning an even more alarming shade of white.
Garrison fell silent.
"And Professor Harrison," she continued, her voice weak from her illness. "He practically died out here. If you hadn't shown up and saved him, he would have frozen to death in that tent."
"And Josh, and Diego... they are all putting their lives on the line for this. Not to mention the worker from UN Outpost 7 who died because of us... I'm carrying the weight of their sacrifices. How can you possibly ask me to turn my back on them?"
"But do you have any idea that the tumor in your head could kill you at any given second?!" Garrison roared, his voice low and dangerous.
"It's my life." She didn't flinch, holding his gaze perfectly.
Before she could say another word, his hand shot out and locked around her wrist.
