The Year I Stopped Being His novel Chapter 21

In the capital of the United States, at the exclusive Evermore Medical Center.

The door to the neurology clinic pushed open, and a young woman walked in. She looked to be in her twenties, with a slender figure and no makeup on her face. Her luminous complexion made her features look like a flawless painting. With her dark hair pulled back, she exuded a vibrant, elegant aura—hardly looking like a patient at all.

But Dr. Simon Yates recognized her at a glance. Not only was she a patient, but she was in the terminal stages of brain cancer.

"Ms. Taylor, have you considered your options? Given your condition... we need to finalize a treatment plan as soon as possible," Simon urged, anxious for her sake.

Her case was highly unique; a delay of even a few days could cause her condition to deteriorate past the point of no return.

Yet, the woman across from him remained utterly serene. She offered a polite smile and said softly,

"Dr. Yates, that's exactly why I'm here today. I want to discuss my treatment plan..."

"Where is your family? For something this serious, it's best to have your relatives involved in the decision," Simon said bluntly.

"I don't have any family."

Simon was left speechless.

He hadn't expected her to be completely alone in the world. As a doctor, however, he had no right to pry further. He adjusted his stance and continued.

"I'm sorry... In that case, what are your thoughts on the treatment? I recall mentioning last time that we could try to get you in touch with Professor Garrison Foster at Metropolitan General Hospital. Have you... managed to contact him? Do you need my help?"

The woman's face flashed with an imperceptible hint of helplessness. "If we take his team out of the equation, what other options do I have?"

"Well... the standard route would be a combination of chemotherapy and radiation." Simon adjusted his glasses, his tone rigorous and honest. "We could try chemo, but frankly, given the tumor's location and characteristics, the efficacy won't be very high. The side effects, on the other hand, will be severe—extreme nausea, hair loss, a drastically compromised immune system... It will be a grueling process. It might buy you some time, but it will shatter your quality of life."
