The Year I Stopped Being His novel Chapter 210

A room at the very back of the cabin had been temporarily converted into a medical bay.

Garrison Foster pulled a sealed glass vial from his metal case, one he had brought all the way from the lab in The United States.

He held it up to the light. The label on the bottle was densely packed with professional molecular formulas and serial numbers.

"What is that?" Sloane asked.

"Vitas Nano-Carriers, a Phase II clinical medication for The Vitas Protocol. It's still in the experimental stage."

Garrison wiped the mouth of the vial with an alcohol pad. "The mechanism is to carry specific antibodies across the blood-brain barrier and bind directly to the receptors on the surface of glioma cells. Once inside the cell, a shift in pH triggers the release of the drug, inducing tumor cell apoptosis while minimizing the impact on healthy cells."

Sloane could barely understand the complex medical jargon, but she trusted Garrison's professional expertise.

Garrison lowered his head, pierced the vial with the needle, and slowly drew the amber liquid into the syringe.

"A standard dosage requires an intravenous infusion once a day for a consecutive week. I only have one dose here, highly concentrated, for emergencies."

Sloane stared at the amber fluid. "How long will that hold?"

"It will stabilize the lesions for about two weeks, giving you enough time for the dive." Garrison set the syringe aside and turned to look at her. "Take off your jacket."

Sloane looked up at him.

His face remained entirely impassive, as if he had asked something completely ordinary, but she caught the subtle bob of his Adam's apple.

"Targeted drugs need to be administered through a central vein for rapid onset," he said, his voice perfectly even. "The flow rate in arm veins is too slow, and it would compromise the efficacy."

Sloane didn't move.

Garrison waited for two seconds before reaching out himself to pull the blanket from her shoulders, his fingers resting on the zipper at her collar.
