Josh stared at the flatlined signal on the screen for three agonizing seconds.
Then he spun around and drove a vicious punch right into Garrison's face!
He threw his entire body weight into the blow, the sheer force of it slicing through the frigid air. Garrison was thrown violently to the side, his body slamming into an equipment crate near the edge of the ice hole, his jaw cracking hard against the metal.
His jaw split open, blood dripping freely down his chin, yet he made no move to wipe it away.
"Why did you force her to unclip the safety line?!" Josh's eyes were bloodshot, his hands trembling violently.
Garrison slumped against the crate, looking like a hollow shell drained of his bones. His lips parted, and his voice scraped out of his throat, faint as a dying breath. "I didn't force her."
"You were ordering her around!"
Josh grabbed him by the collar, hauling him off the ground. Their faces were inches apart, so close they could see the consuming fury burning out in each other's pupils.
"'Don't you dare unclip that line'—who the hell said that?! Who do you think you are? What gives you the right to order her around? She divorced you! Divorced! She's not your subordinate, she's not your patient, and she is sure as hell not a part of your precious Foster family!"
"Coming to Antarctica was her own choice! You're not even an official member of this expedition, what gives you the right to command her?!"
Garrison didn't fight back.
His arms hung limply at his sides, his knuckles white as he desperately clutched the dead tablet. He stared at Josh, but his unfocused, ash-clouded pupils seemed to look right through him.
"Are you done?" his voice was terrifyingly soft.
"No!" Josh shoved him violently back against the crate, stepped back, and gasped for air, his chest heaving. "You never even deserved to be her husband!"
Garrison's pupils constricted violently.
