The Year I Stopped Being His novel Chapter 311

"Exactly because you are my mother."

Garrison cut her off. His voice wasn't loud—in fact, it was lower than before—but his words strangled Rosemary's tirade, silencing her instantly.

He took the cigarette from his lips. The long ash finally snapped, dusting the toe of his shoe, but he didn't bother brushing it away.

"Exactly because you are my mother, I had to respect you, obey you, and pretend absolutely nothing was wrong all these years!" He finally looked up. For the first time, a flicker of burning fury ignited within his otherwise dead, amber eyes.

"Since I was a child, you've done nothing but try to control me. You controlled who my friends were, what I majored in, and what school I attended. When I grew up, you tried to control my marriage, my family, and my entire life. You used Arthur's death as a leash. You weaponized my guilt to chain me down, trying to convince me that I owed Quinn a life debt, forcing me to live under that suffocating shadow forever."

He took a step forward. Quinn, collapsed on the floor, looked up at him, her tear-streaked face twisted in sheer terror.

"You encouraged Quinn's romantic obsession with me—did you really think I was blind to it?" His gaze swept over Quinn before snapping back to Rosemary. "You used Quinn to test me. You used her to drive a wedge into my marriage with Sloane, and you even used Archie to hold me hostage. You deliberately handed Archie over to Quinn to raise, hoping she would mold him into her own son, thinking that would somehow force me to be with her! But even that wasn't enough for you. You wanted me entirely under your thumb. You wanted the perfect, obedient little boy—one who would marry the woman you chose, walk the path you paved, and never dare to defy you."

Garrison advanced step by step, closing the distance. Rosemary began to tremble violently.

"But none of that works anymore."
