Chapter 29 Clear–cut Truths

The news that the Joyner family had disowned their mistaken heiress was already spreading fast.
Wayne had guessed the real story: Scarlett must’ve realized the Joyner family was going to make a move against her, so she’d cut ties first as a form of damage control.
She’d likely hoped that by retreating first, they might take pity and offer her another chance.
But instead, her plan had backfired. The Joyner family had genuinely cast her out.
Driven by bitterness, she kept slandering Rebecca, desperate to prove she was better–to make the Joyner family regret everything.
Still, even then, Wayne hadn’t wanted to completely destroy her future. He’d asked Calvin to find her a job after she was expelled.
He never expected to run into her at a hospital.
He’d been furious. Thought Scarlett had sunk so low that she was now scamming people right in front of him.
Underneath that anger was disappointment.
He couldn’t believe one of his students had turned out like this.
Everything he’d said—those cruel words–had been out of rage.
He, he had just…
Sigh. No explanation could fix it now. All he could do was glance helplessly at his daughter for backup.
Wendy didn’t know what to say either.
Honestly, her father’s words had been too much.
Scarlett hadn’t held it against them–instead, she’d helped save Dora’s life. That was more than anyone could’ve asked for.
She herself wasn’t without fault. If not for seeing Sean yesterday, she might not have given the woman who “cursed” Dora a chance either.

“I owe you an apology too. My attitude yesterday was out of line. You tried to warn me, and I should’ve believed you. I’m sorry.”
She bowed slowly, sincerely.
Only then did Scarlett finally lift her head.
There wasn’t even a trace of pride or smugness in her expression–just a faint smile as she let out a long breath.
So this was what it felt like to get revenge face to face.
She used to be shackled by moral guilt, always holding back.
And in the end, the only one who got hurt… was her.
But now?
She realized…
If everyone only gets one life, why ruin yours just to protect someone else’s?
Her smile grew deeper.
Her eyes lit up.
“Alright. I accept your apologies.”
Wayne and Wendy exchanged a look, both clearly relieved.
“Ms. Scarlett, you’re truly a generous person,” Wendy said, wiping tears from the corners of her eyes, finally managing a smile.
Scarlett waved a hand. “Let’s talk about something more important.”
She nodded toward Dora, her tone softening.
“The child’s asleep now. She can’t hear us, so there’s no need to worry.”
Wendy nodded quickly and jumped right in.
“Ms. Scarlett, you mentioned something earlier about after the medicine–what should we do for her recovery?”
Scarlett cut her off. “Just make sure she stays away from wolfsbane. Standard recovery

Wayne, being trained in Western medicine and focused on preventative care, didn’t know much about alternative treatments. But he did recognize toxic plants.
“That stuff’s poisonous from root to flower. It’s also known as heartbreak
grass.”
Scarlett didn’t respond–just silently confirmed it.
Wendy wasn’t familiar with wolfsbane, but she had heard of heartbreak grass.
“Ms. Scarlett, that’s not possible. All of Dora’s meals are prepared by a professional chef.”
“My husband hired a bunch of well–known experts. They would never…”
She suddenly turned to Wayne.
“Wait–there was a young female cook who started recently. Said she came from a mountain village and was working part–time to pay for grad school!”
But then she hesitated again, brows furrowing.
“She’s always been polite and respectful. When Dora got sick, she even suggested using honeysuckle in her cooking. My husband bought some just for her to use.”
Wayne’s expression changed. “Wolfsbane looks almost identical to honeysuckle!”
Wendy went pale. “Are you saying… my husband bought the wrong one?”
Scarlett didn’t say anything.
But in Wendy, she saw a reflection of her old self.
The truth was right in front of her.
And yet, she still tried to cover it up with sentiment.
Scarlett let out a bitter chuckle.
