Raymond walked out. He glanced at his son lying on the ground and raised a brow. He didn’t say anything. Instead, he looked at Maya.
“Want to give it a try?”
Maya actually did. She was eager. “Who am I fighting?”
“Me.”
There was a teasing edge in Raymond’s voice.
“Come on, Maya.”
She nodded without thinking.
“Let’s go!”
She had never liked losing.
The moment she spoke, she bent her knees slightly and pushed off. In two quick steps, she lunged forward. Power burst through her legs as she aimed a hard kick at his stomach.
Raymond moved lightly, like a cat. He stepped aside and dodged her attacks with ease.
Maya refused to admit defeat. She kicked upward, then swept low, her moves quick and sharp as she aimed for his side again and again.
“Not bad, Maya,” he said with a smile. But at the same time, he caught her leg and gave it a light pull. Her balance broke, and she dropped to the ground.
In one move, Raymond pinned her down, his voice turning cool. “If I were a real opponent, your leg would be broken right now.”
Maya felt annoyed as she lay there. Her eyes shifted. She bit her lip and looked at him.
Suddenly, her eyes turned red.
Tears started to well up and were on the verge of falling.
Raymond loosened his grip, thinking he had hurt her.
That was all Maya needed. She pulled her legs together and kicked him away in a flash.

Before he could react, she lunged like a small cannonball, using all her strength to slam him down. She pinned him to the ground, her knee pressing firmly against him.
Her hand grabbed his neck, her eyes shining bright.
“I win!”
Of course, she didn’t.
The whole counterattack happened in a split second.
Raymond lay on the ground, stunned for two seconds. “Maya, your strength is really not normal.”
He hadn’t expected to be knocked down by a kid.
Unbelievable.
“You faked crying. You tricked me.”
“That’s your problem for going soft,” Maya said, breathing fast, completely shameless. “If I win using tricky methods, then it’s still a win.”
He looked at her darkly. “That’s cheating.”
Maya stuck out her tongue at him.
George wandered over.
His unfocused eyes slowly return to normal. He crouched off to the side, rubbing his head, still feeling the dull ache.
When that punch had sent him flying earlier, he’d reacted fast and caught himself with one hand. That move neutralized most of the impact.
Otherwise, he might’ve ended up with a concussion.
Raymond got up from the ground. He didn’t bother arguing with Maya. Instead, he waved her off to go play.
After brushing the dust off his clothes, he walked over and stood beside Wendy, who had just come out of the house. His voice was low and casual, like he was making small talk.
“Honey, I ran into Thomas yesterday.”
Wendy turned her head slightly and grabbed his hand. “And? Did he come looking for Maya?”

“Yeah. But she ignored him. She chose us.” His tone wasn’t happy. His brows pulled together j a little.
He was glad Maya chose them. But more than joy, there was something else. Something heav he couldn’t quite name.
When she faced her biological father, she didn’t hesitate at all.
That said everything. That man had never given her anything worth holding on to.
Raymond couldn’t even imagine what kind of life she’d lived before this.
Wendy gently wrapped her arms around him and rested her face against his shoulder.
“Maya is our daughter now,” she said softly, holding him tighter. “I don’t want to hurt her. If sh doesn’t bring it up, we don’t ask.”
“We need to be patient. Patience is the key,” he said softly, almost like he was trying to convinc Wendy and himself.
When he finished, Raymond looked down at the woman in his arms.
Wendy looked up at him at the same time.
Their eyes met. Then both of them quickly looked away.
As if they could really be patient.
