Up until now, Alfred’s only playmate had been Maya.
They had never been apart for this long.
For the first time ever, Alfred felt restless.
Toby glanced at him, then looked away. “Going back to the mansion won’t help,” he said. “Even if I ask, they’ll just think I’ve been leading astray, that I’m trying to go against them.”
That was the truth.
He and Edric had been raised by Philbert since they were kids.
But they were treated very differently. Toby had been trained as the heir–obedient, well–behaved, and always following orders.
He was young and couldn’t break free from his elders. Toby doesn’t get a choice. He had to listen.

Edric was different.
Whether his age or mindset, the older generation all approved of him.
Philbert was strict with Toby but not with Edric.
Different standards applied to Edric.
Still, Toby wasn’t close to Edric. He couldn’t be sure Edric would help him.
So that left George.
George was the one who knew Edric best.

Toby steadied his tone. He stepped forward, sat across from George, leaned in a little, and softened his voice.
“Think about it. You’re at the very bottom in this house. Edric picks on you. Alfred doesn’t like you. I can’t stand you either. But Maya–she’s the only one who doesn’t mind you.
“Your friends might turn on you. They might be scared of you. But family won’t do that.”
George’s eyes shifted from confusion to clarity.
“Is that true?”
Toby continued to brainwash him, way too smoothly. “Of course.
“You’ve always been hard to get along with. You know that, right? Even your friends can’t really stand you.”
George felt like something was off, but he couldn’t quite explain it.

Chapter 192 The Sorry Squad
But even if Maya doesn’t mind me, it doesn’t mean she actually likes me.”

“She does,” Toby said without missing a beat, a faint smile forming on his lips. “You just haven’t noticed. You like hugging people, right? But no one likes getting close to you. Maya doesn’t like it too. She pulls away when you try. But if you can get Edric to bring her back, then she will see you as her hero.
“Right now, you’re the family’s only hope
“Mom would praise you. Maya would look up to you.”
He sounded as sincere as possible.
George looked at Toby’s earnest face and thought it over. He imagined Maya being grateful to him, and Wendy looked at him with pride. He pressed his lips together. “Alright. I’ll do it.”
Edric was a total shut–in.
He only ever stayed in a few fixed places.
Once they figured out where he was, the three of them ignored the staff who tried to stop them and went straight to the lab door. Standing outside the heavy metal door, George lifted his leg and started kicking it.
“Edric! Open up! It’s your brother!”
Alfred stood behind him, listening to the loud banging. He asked, “George, is this really going to work?”
“Relax,” George said. “I’m fearless.”
Toby stayed quiet, watching. He didn’t like dealing with people he didn’t know, especially the dangerous kind. So he was more than happy to let George, that reckless wild boar, take the lead.
After all that noise, there was still no response.
“No one’s in there?” Toby frowned.
George snorted. “He’s in there. He just doesn’t feel like answering me.”
“You’re useless,” Toby said coldly. “You can’t even get someone to open a door.”
Γ
George had never been called useless before. His face darkened. “I told you, he doesn’t want to answer me. If you beg, maybe he’ll open it. If he feels bad for you, he might even say yes.”
Toby sensed the shift in his tone. Years of dealing with George had taught him one thing: when George spoke in that tone, trouble was coming. His face changed. He took a step back.
Too late.
George grabbed his collar and yanked him forward hard.
Toby stumbled, but he reacted fast. He lifted his leg and kicked at George’s knee joint.
If you hit that spot right, a person’s leg would go weak for a while.
