Chapter 247 What’s Your Name?
Maya pressed both pieces of chocolate into his palm and said gently, “Here, eat them.”

He didn’t take them. Instead, he drew his hand back a little and shook his head. “I don’t want
them.”
Maya pushed them into his hand anyway. “If I give them to you, you take them. I’m your big sis, so you have to listen to me.
“I don’t need to restore my strength right now. Really.”
She was telling the truth.
Maya had realized that her body didn’t seem to need much energy here. Or maybe the rules of this place simply worked differently for her.
She almost never felt hungry.
“Onyx, I feel like you’re the type who gives too much.” Maya lowered her head and looked into his eyes. “If you continue ike this, people will walk all over you.”
Number 4 stared blankly at Maya for a moment before accepting the chocolate.
Many adults had said similar things to him before.
But whenever they said it, there was always this high–and–mighty edge in their tone.
Or they sounded as if they were judging his worth and deciding whether he was valuable enough to raise.
Number 4 didn’t turn her down again. He carefully peeled open one of the wrappers. The chocolate inside had already melted and was sticking messily to the foil.
He took a tiny bite. The bitterness of cocoa and the sweetness of chocolate melted together on his tongue.
His eyes instantly brightened, and he looked up, giving Maya a shy little smile.
Maya reached over and patted his head.
Time felt vague on the island.
Maya didn’t know exactly how long she had been there.

Maybe it had been two months, or maybe even longer.
Number 4 was still the same as before.

He was small, dirty, and quiet, always trailing behind her like a little tail that never made a sound.
When Maya arrived there, she had been wearing two layers of clothing.
Because of that, she could wash one set and switch between them.
Whenever Number 4 had nothing to do, he would run to the beach and wash her clothes for her.
Maya sat with him by the shore, listening as the waves lapped against the sand in soft, uneven rhythms.
She crouched beside him. On a sudden whim, she reached out and brushed the bangs away from his forehead.
Maya perked up at once. “Onyx, you really need to wash your face properly. Look how dirty you are. You’re not cute at all like this.”
Number 4 had been washing the clothes meticulously. When Maya suddenly pushed his hair aside, he froze for a moment, looking a little lost.
“I’ll wash your face for you. Don’t move.”
Maya dipped her hand in the water and started washing his face. She was not exactly gentle, scrubbing him as if she were cleaning a muddy potato. Number 4 was rubbed until he swayed from side to side, but he never tried to dodge.
Number 4 had absolutely no way of refusing Maya.
She had always been a little willful. Given he was her little follower, his protest didn’t matter much. She’d still do things her way.
After Number 4’s face was clean, he looked up at her, his lashes fluttering.
Maya looked at that face, covered her mouth, and fell into a strange silence.
The last light of sunset fell across his face, making the freshly washed skin look especially soft and delicate.
Number 4’s delicate features were now fully revealed before her.

The curve of his brows, the bridge of his nose, the shape of his lips, and his pure black eyes. After his face was washed, his eyes looked a little wet. They no longer held that unreadable calm. Instead, they carried a faint, fragile softness.
Maya stared at that face, and her mind went blank for a brief moment.
She knew this face.
Or more precisely, she knew the adult version of this face.
But…
No way.
Maya bit the corner of her lip and stared at him in disbelief.
The boy tilted his head to look at her. Water dripped from the ends of his hair, and there was a hint of confusion in his eyes. He looked like a kitten suddenly pinned down by its owner, not knowing what had happened but not struggling, either.
“Onyx, what’s your name? Your real name.”
The boy fell silent again.
He was the type to retreat when he encountered difficulties.
Whenever something happened, he would hide away and stop talking.
The thought that this sweet little boy might actually grow into someone as ruthless as Edric made Maya shudder.
Kindness was the last word anyone would use to describe Edric.
His way of thinking was exactly the same as Philbert’s. It was the typical mindset of a politician. As long as the final result was what they wanted, they wouldn’t care if the road there was soaked in blood.
