Edric didn’t call her out on it, his chin resting on his knees. “I haven’t seen it. I’ll have to check it out.”

“When you get out of here someday, you should give it a watch!” Maya gave it a little plug, and the thought of Edric turning on the TV after he got back and seeing a white Olaf on the screen, the boy’s stunned face struck her as funny.

Edric’s eyes curved, and he let out a soft laugh of

agreement.

“Got it.”

At dawn the next day, Maya woke Edric up and took him to hide and run together.

The whole process was especially rough, since Edric’s stamina wasn’t as good as hers and the terrain here had plenty of obstacles, so stumbling and tripping while they ran was unavoidable.

Maya had taken all four guns she’d swiped and stashed them separately in different spots.

The shoulder–sling gun was too conspicuous, so she’d picked one she could hide under her clothes.

One arm cradling the coat against her chest, the other holding Edric’s hand, she ran forward over fallen leaves and loose gravel.

The island wasn’t especially large. Along the way, they unexpectedly ran into two kids.

Everyone instinctively kept a certain safe distance and didn’t rush to approach.

In the end it was the other side that spoke first.

“There aren’t any hunters around right now, so there’s no point in us getting into a fight.” The girl hiding behind the tree worked up the courage to negotiate with the two of them. “And besides, we’re not enemies.”

Maya agreed with that. “Our enemies are the hunters on this island.”

Seeing that Maya carried herself like she was the one in charge, the girl lifted her chin and tried to talk it out with her. “Something’s a little strange this time. It feels like fewer hunters came. We’ve barely heard any gunshots.”

Maya glanced around and signaled for them to find a good hiding spot first so they could talk it

over.

“Have you ever thought about leaving?” She really wanted to know what the kids here were thinking.

The girl ducked low and slipped into the dense thicket, saying it like it was obvious. “Of course I have. And it’s not just me. Everyone’s thought about it.

“But we’re kids.”

Kids had no power to put up any resistance, and to the adults, even their resistance would only come across as weak and laughable.

“A lot of us on the island know each other, and even the ones we don’t–after spending enough time together, it’s hard to feel any real hostility.”

There were no people who were born evil.

Regardless of their cleverness, they were still just kids.

Nobody wanted their companions to die, and nobody liked this kill–or–be–killed system.

Maya did the math. She had four days left before she had to leave, and she wanted to do something before then.

So Maya inched a step forward and reached out to talk with her directly. “What’s your name, if you don’t mind me asking?”

“I don’t have a name. I’m Number 61, so you can call me by that.”

Maya wasn’t about to waste time.

Keeping it short and clear, she said, “All right, Number 61.

“I scouted it out ahead of time. The military helicopter here can carry every one of us in one trip.

“Once all the armed hunters are gone, I’ll go round everyone up to leave together. You probably know most of the people here, right? Can you gather everyone in one place?”

“I can.” Number 61 knit her brows. “But none of us know how to fly a chopper.”

“There’s a pilot.” Maya said, “We just hijack him and take hostage.”

Number 61 looked half–convinced. “But what about those gunmen?”

Maya gave the gun a little wave in front of her. “Leave them to me.”

“So were those gunshots earlier from you?” Otherwise, she really couldn’t think of any way Maya could’ve gotten hold of a gun. There weren’t even any melee weapons here, never mind firearms.

Maya didn’t answer.

Number 61 suddenly felt like she’d figured out the truth.

“There’s one more thing…” Maya tugged Edric out in front of her. “He’ll tell you what to do next.

“Just do it the way we talked about last night.” Under the boy’s silent gaze, Maya made a fist to cheer him on. “Edric, you understand choppers, right?”
