On the third day, Maya found the last gunman in hiding. She circled around from the side and raised her gun without a sound.

She turned him into a sieve right there on the spot.

Maya listened to the crowd of kids chattering all at once and blinked. “He’s perfectly safe, no need to worry. I’m his sister after all, so nothing’s going to happen to him. Relax.”

Over those three days, the kids‘ trust in Maya had shot straight up, to the point that they’d have aimed wherever she pointed.

Since she’d put it that way, they had nothing more to say.

All the kids shoved and jostled one another, piling into the helicopter in one big rush.

The pilot had been starved for three whole days and was curled up in a corner of the cockpit.

Maya pointed her gun at the back of his head and said coldly, “Get us out of here.

“Or I’ll put you down.”

The pilot said nothing.

Before she left, Maya didn’t forget to drag a few bodies around with some effort and arrange them into a distress signal.

Someone like George, who wore a smile all day with his moods a mystery, ought to have a flavor all his own when he cried.

But Edric’s crying had genuinely traumatized her.

She’d barely clawed her way out of that whirlpool of tears, and the first thing waiting for her back in her own timeline was being held and cried on by another man?

“George?” she ventured, her voice a lot softer than before. “Are you okay?”

He ran through her name twice in a row, his voice shaking. “You just passed out in my arms, and your breathing stopped for two minutes.”
