But he wasn’t a dictator by nature. Meeting Maya’s gaze, he puffed out his cheeks, then let the expression fall, reluctantly giving in.
“Okay. I’ll respect your decision.”
It was probably a good thing Maya hadn’t grown up at the Clark Residence.
After all, none of the adults in that family respected children’s wishes.
The Clarks had always looked down on the timid and weak–willed Edric.
Yet after Edric grew up and finally took a portion of real power from Philbert, those elders who had once treated him harshly conveniently chose to forget how awful they had been.
Every time they met, they rushed to praise him, saying that Edric had always been the most qualified heir since childhood.
He found those old people incredibly amusing.
Did they think the Edric who used to get scolded to tears all the time had forgotten?
“Goodbye, George.” Maya lowered her head and rubbed her cheek against his with a smile. “I’ll miss you.”
After saying goodbye to their parents one after another, the two children got into the car.
Wendy reluctantly watched the children leave. She lightly clenched her hands and asked softly, “Raymond, did your family ever mention how long they’ll be in there?”
Raymond stroked his chin. “Just one week this time. It won’t be very long.”
He sighed inwardly.
As expected, they still couldn’t bear it.
The schedule had gone from a full month down to just one week.
Edric had gone so easy on them that it was practically ridiculous.
Drones buzzed through the sky, spreading out in all directions as they swept over layered tree canopies and winding streams.

Chapter 268 He Changed the Rules
Compared to what Maya had experienced before, this environment was infinitely better.

The duration was shorter, the climate was mild, and it looked more like an ordinary stretch of wilderness on the outskirts of town. The temperature barely fluctuated, the streams were crystal clear, and there were flat areas everywhere suitable for setting up camp. It was almost no different from the vast training grounds behind the Clark Residence.
“All 50 children have been deployed. Any other instructions?”
Someone asked.
The person in charge of operations froze for a moment and muttered, “Wait, that’s not right… Didn’t we originally decide on a hundred kids?”
He looked at his assistant and lowered his voice. “Why was it suddenly cut in half? And what can anyone even do in just one week?”
What Edric had originally wanted wasn’t this mild version at all. The original rules had been closer to a brutal manhunt.
Ten children would be selected and fitted with tracking devices, becoming prey fleeing in all directions, while the remaining 90 would be hunters, armed hunters.
There had been no room for mercy. It had clearly been designed to grind Maya and Alfred down.
The monitoring room wasn’t very large.
Naturally, Edric heard the operator’s quiet complaints.
He had already arranged every step of the process in advance. His fingers casually slid across several lines of the daily reports while he replied without even looking up, his voice quiet.
“It’s just a training exercise. There’s no need to be that harsh on children. Fifty people aren’t exactly a small number.”
A brief silence followed.
It wasn’t a small number, but compared to the original hundred, it had literally been cut in half.
The supervisor wisely shut his mouth and asked no further questions.
Edric had originally planned to completely leave the two children alone.
He had already been generous enough. Fifty participants, a fairly large island, adequate supplies, and only one week. As long as they weren’t too foolish, nothing would happen to
them.

Chapter 268 He Changed the Rules
There were no deadly dangers here, no extreme temperatures, and no wild animals.
It was perfectly safe.

But after struggling with the decision for an entire day, his concern ultimately won out. Edric adjusted his earpiece and issued instructions early.
All drones were to prioritize circling around Maya and Alfred.
That way he could keep watch over their every move without interruption.
In the clearing, all 50 children had been gathered on an open grassy field.
Many of them already knew one another, and shortly after arriving they naturally formed groups, clustering together in twos and threes while whispering among themselves.
Maya only knew Alfred, so the two instinctively stayed close together.
A friendly–looking coordinator stepped down from the helicopter. His gaze swept across the group of half–grown children as a practiced smile appeared on his face.
