Back then, Edric had been young and naive.

He’d never once imagined how hard it would be, with a personality as soft as his, to find his footing under the Clarks‘ strict, icy rules once he was out from under his parents‘ protection.
It wasn’t until he was stranded on a deserted island that he finally, belatedly came to understand himself that he couldn’t treat a human life like it was nothing, and that he could never become the flawless heir his family expected him to be.
Maya’s arrival marked the first time in his life that a fierce urge to run away ever took root in him.
He’d wanted to leave with her.
“So you actually used to think about that?” Maya cupped her face in her hands, her eyes going soft as she carefully walked him back through the past. “But if you’d come with me, the two of us would’ve had a pretty miserable time wandering all over the place, and neither of us had any
money.
“Mm.” She’d led him back into those old memories, and a faint smile touched the corner of Edric’s mouth as he murmured, half–joking, “I was probably just so scared back then that I wasn’t thinking straight.”
“Edric.” Maya reached out and brushed his bangs aside, trying to find some trace of the past in
his face.
Once she opened up and got comfortable with someone, she’d instinctively take a mile when given an inch, and right now she was feeling nostalgic. “Back when you were a kid, you really knew how to turn on the waterworks. Compared to now, you’re a whole different person.”
At eight years old, he’d been an absolute crybaby.
The grown–up Edric, on the other hand, was like a block of ice that just wouldn’t melt.
“Tears are the most useless thing after all.” Maya’s blunt assessment drew a gentle laugh out of him. “As a kid I never learned my lesson and always tried to let my feelings out by crying, but after I turned eight, I don’t think it ever happened again.”
What Philbert had done back then had been truly merciless, forcing him to cast off every last bit of his weakness and become a real adult.
Edric had nothing to complain about when it came to the past.
He’d chosen this path himself, and he didn’t think there was anything wrong with where he d

ended up.
“Maya.” Edric carefully cleaned her wound and asked in a low, offhand voice, “Do you really miss my younger self that much?
“I always figured I was pretty unlikable.”
After all, aside from his parents, all his other relatives had taken a particular dislike to his personality.

“Says who? You were super cute as a kid.” The words tumbled out of Maya, and just thinking about Onyx made her happy. “Onyx and I were the absolute best of friends in the whole world.”
It had been more than three months of battle–forged friendship, and the bond was rock–solid.
Edric couldn’t help but laugh. “So the two of us really were good friends, then?”
“Yep, back then we were the best friends in the whole world.” Maya nodded, a touch of regret in her voice. “We said we’d grow up together, but you’ve already gone and turned into a grown- up.”
Edric went still for a beat.
He remembered that he’d apparently once said he wanted to take her home so they could grow up together.
The corner of his mouth curved, and he dimly began to understand why she’d dodged that promise of his at the time.
She’d known all along that some promises couldn’t be kept, even after they were made.
He stood, walked over to Maya, dropped into a half–crouch in front of her, raised his hand, and gently brushed the half–healed scrape on her face.
His fingertip was as light as a feather drifting down onto her skin.
“Maya.” A photo of himself at nine flashed through Edric’s mind, and he asked her, “When I’m nine, will I get to meet you again?”
Maya blinked.
It was a question she’d quietly turned over many times herself.
“I’m not really sure.” She shook her head honestly, then added. “But if I do get to see you again, I’ll find a way to take you out and show you a good time.
“Edric, the world out there is a lot of fun, and I’ll make sure you’re a little happier.

“As a kid you weren’t happy at all. You looked like a total grouch.”
An old saying suddenly came to Maya.
She couldn’t remember how the rest of it went, but one line had always been a classic.
Make hay while the sun shines.
