“Dad, where are we going?” Maya asked after they split up with her mom.

“To Silent Archive,” Raymond said. “I’m taking you to see your future company.”

Maya said nothing. She tightened her grip on his hand.

This was her first time visiting the legendary gathering place of assassins.

It was also the first time she would meet the uncle she had only heard about.

When they arrived, the first thing she noticed was a cluster of gray–and–white buildings in the distance. The logo on top of the main building glowed brightly. Silent Archive.

Simple and clean. No fancy design. It looked like an ordinary tech company.

People moved around inside.

Maya noticed that everyone looked… normal.

Hoodies, jeans, sneakers. Some carried coffee cups. Some wore headphones while talking on their phones.

If she didn’t know what this place really was, she would have thought it was just another software company’s office campus.

The outside had gray walls and dark glass windows. Inside was a spacious lobby. Raymond led her to the

elevator.

They reached the 12th floor.

The elevator doors opened. White walls stretched down both sides of the hallway. Every few feet, there was Technology Department. Intelligence Analysis Center.

Everything was so organized. So orderly.

Nothing like the assassin headquarters she had imagined.

In Maya’s mind, it should have smelled like blood. There should have been weapons hanging on the walls and piles of skulls in the corners.

Instead, there were white walls, carpeted floors, motion–sensor lights, keycard access, office procedures, weekly meetings, and performance reviews.

It looked exactly like a regular office building.

Raymond led her down the hallway and stopped in front of a door.

The automatic door slid open. Maya peeked inside and blinked as she looked at the current head of the Clarks.

Ned was a few years younger than Raymond.

The brothers were entirely different.

Raymond seemed harmless and easy to overlook, Ned, on the other hand, had a bold presence. Even when he smiled, there was an air of pride and elegance, as if he naturally looked down on everyone else.

He said hello but only gave her a brief glance from above.

After greeting Maya, he entirely ignored Raymond, treating his older brother like he wasn’t even there.

“I’ve really thought it through, Uncle Ned,” Maya said clearly.

“I’m still a student. I still have school. I can’t travel for work during classes. Weekends and summer vacation are fine. So would this count as part–time or full–time? And when I grow up, do I get health insurance and a retirement plan?”

It couldn’t be helped. Being an assassin was still a job.

And as a future employee, she needed to understand the benefits package.

Ned said nothing.

One eyebrow lifted slightly.

This kid is so worried about money. She even considered things like insurance and retirement benefits before becoming an assassin?

My pathetic brother must have talked about employee benefits nonstop at home.

“If you want them, we can arrange it,” Ned said. He folded his hands and rested his chin on them. “Now, Maya, it’s time to choose your code name.”
