The scene reminded him of when Alfred was still around. He’d had the same cold expression. The brother- and–sister duo before him had looked exactly the same too.

Who would’ve thought that after Alfred left, Lawrence would take his place?

Jonathan wasn’t good at arguing. After realizing that Maya really was cold and heartless, he got so angry that he simply clenched his fists. In the end, he took a deep breath, turned around, and walked away.

Lawrence watched him leave. Then he handed Maya a glass of water and sat beside her.

His voice sounded innocent and curious. “So, Jonathan’s in your class too? That jerk?”

His mouth was really as sharp as Toby’s.

Maya took a sip of water. “We were classmates before. I didn’t expect him to still be in my class after switching homerooms.”

What a rotten luck!

She thought about it and reached out poking Lawrence’s still–bony cheek.

His skin was thin, and she could feel the bone underneath. She frowned and poked him again.

Seriously. Damn it.

“Does Uncle Thomas not feed you?”

Lawrence’s head tilted from her poking, but he didn’t pull away.

“I’ve always been skinny,” he said. Then he added, “You too.”

The two of them had always been the type who never gained weight easily.

Maya squeezed her arm and had to admit he was right.

She poked him again. “Oh, right. Remember to do my homework for me when school starts.”

Lawrence blinked. “What?”

He tilted his head. “You don’t do your own homework?”

“Sometimes. Before, I usually let Alfred do it. But he’s training to become an assassin now, so I’m handing my homework over to you.”

“Okay,” Lawrence said. Then he muttered softly, “An assassin…”

His gaze dropped to the table. No one knew what he was thinking.

“He’s becoming an assassin. What about you?” He didn’t care what kind of job Alfred chose.

“I’m planning to do the same thing.” Maya didn’t hide it. I’ve already reported to Silent Archive.”

Lawrence froze.

His hand unconsciously tightened around the hem of his school uniform. His knuckles turned white.

A wave of fear crashed over him. It spread from his heart to every part of his body, making him feel like he was sinking.

Memories he couldn’t stop came rushing back.

He had thought he had forgotten them, but now they all returned.

Little Maya holding him tightly. The two of them were hiding together inside a closet.

Whenever someone treated them badly, she would hide with him first. If hiding didn’t work, she would find another way to solve the problem.

Maya had always been brave.

Lawrence stared blankly for a moment. Then he lowered his head and buried his face in his arms.

His muffled voice came from behind them. “That job sounds dangerous.”

Maya leaned over and hugged him. She ruffled his hair. Don’t worry. I’ll be really careful. You don’t have to worry about me. I know my limits.”

Their relationship had always been like this. Maya was the leader. Lawrence had never been able to stop her from doing anything. The only thing he could do was stay out of her way.

“Then you have to be careful.”

He paused, as if organizing his thoughts. His eyes curved slightly as he spoke seriously. “If something dangerous happens, run. Let everyone else go first. Hide behind them. Then if they get hurt, at least they’ll have covered your escape.”

Maya looked at him silently.

She suddenly realized that her little brother’s sense of right and wrong might be even shakier than her own.

Maya’s class was an interesting mix.

Half the students came from wealthy families. The other half were top students with excellent grades.

They used to divide classes based on family background.

But now they mixed the rich kids with ordinary students. There was no pattern.

There was only one thing they had in common–everyone was ridiculously good–looking.

Walking into the classroom felt like stepping onto the set of a teen drama. Even the most ordinary–looking boy sitting in the corner could probably play a supporting role on TV.
