Chapter 811 Not Happening
Hey, I have a reputation to keep, you know.

“So what you’re saying is, other factions are going to move on the Order in a few days?” Maya propped her cheek in her hand and turned the pieces over in her mind. “Is there any chance I’d know some of them personally?”
“The Archive’s system was breached by the Imperial Order’s technical tearn not long ago,” Edric said, working through it carefully. “A significant number of archived contractor identities got exposed in the process. Mr. Clark was fairly unhappy about it.” He paused. “Archive personnel will be on-site when it happens. There’s a real possibility you’d run into colleagues.”
Taking down a hostile organization was, by Archive standards, practically a large-scale team event.
“Huh,” Maya said, genuinely impressed. “That’s going to be interesting.”
“That said, two of my friends are inside the Imperial Order,” Maya added, her brow pulling together as she turned the problem over. She needed to think about what that meant for Lucy and the others.
Leave early and take them with me?
Unlikely.
Lucy and the others weren’t going to take her word for anything without a real explanation, and if something that barely counted as an explanation was enough to make people abandon their organization and run, she’d have taken a very different career path by now.
“Friends,” Edric said, the word carrying a faint, barely-there edge that his tone was careful to smooth over. keeping firmly to his well-practiced image of the patient older brother. “They’ll find their own way out if they’re good enough. When are you planning to come home?”
“Not yet,” Maya said. “I haven’t finished what I came here to do.”
She’d come in specifically to get a read on Ernest.
And once it became clear that Ernest was far more than he appeared, she’d sharpened her attention considerably.
Dropping her last name out loud had been deliberate. She’d wanted to watch his face.
Ernest hadn’t suspected her of being a Clark for even a second.

That told her something important: he didn’t have a complete file on the Clark family. Or rather, he had records on the Clarks, just not one on Maya specifically.
That actually made sense.
She’d been adopted. She wasn’t blood.
But Ernest almost certainly had files on every other member of her family.

If those files ever made it to the protagonist’s group, she didn’t even want to think about what that crowd of righteously motivated classmates might do with them.
The thought of just eliminating those classinates had crossed Maya’s mind more than once, if she was being honest with herself. Clean and simple.
But the system had been clear: it wouldn’t work.
Even if she removed them, someone else would step into the same roles, and the story would keep moving exactly as it was written.
The plot had been set in stone from the very beginning.
She could try to reshape things, but killing her way to safety wasn’t an option the plot allowed her.
“I’m not coming home,” Maya said quietly. “Just cover for me with the family, okay? Tell them I’m out of the country on an assignment.”
Edric started to push back, and Maya immediately switched tactics, pitching her voice into something that belonged entirely to a much younger version of herself. “Come on, just say yes. Otherwise I’m going to tell the younger version of you about how you keep picking on me now.”
Edric always softened the moment she brought up his childhood.
His limits bent outward every single time, further than he ever intended.
“Fine,” Edric said, and just like that, he gave in. “You can stay there for a while. But you call me every single day, Maya. That’s.non-negotiable.”
He’d noticed, somewhere along the way, that his capacity for patience had reached heights he never knew existed, and the credit belonged entirely to having/Maya as a little sister.
If George ever talked to him the way she did, the conversation would’ve ended with a gun to George’s forehead. But Maya was different.
Every time she pulled something like this, the same images surfaced in his mind, quiet and uninvited, and the sigh he let out was soundless. “Video call me tomorrow. Don’t forget.”

“Deal,” Maya said immediately, already mentally planning to borrow a spare phone from Lucy the moment she hung up. “Actually, I’m getting a new hairstyle tomorrow anyway. I’ll call you after and show you the big reveal!”
A small, genuine smile found its way onto Edric’s face. “I’ll look forward to it,” he said.
Maya ended the call. Lucy glanced over her shoulder and tossed her a spare phone without being asked. “We should all play together sometime,” she said. “The three of us. A full squad.”
It wasn’t like there was much else to do.
When there were no active jobs, time stretched out flat and empty, and games were usually what filled it. Their circumstances didn’t leave much room for going out, so the better part of their downtime had always lived somewhere inside whatever game was running on their screens. That was actually how they’d
