Chapter 34 Broccoli
Finished
The line connected, and Edric got straight to the point. “I heard the joint operation against the Imperial. Order has moved into its final deployment phase.”
“Your intelligence network is as sharp as ever,” the person on the othekend said, easy and conversational. “That’s correct. The joint task force approved the final plan three days ago
“Seven Imperial Order locations, two communications hubs, all within the strike zone. The government’s special response units are deploying in parallel.”
“I don’t need the operational details,” Edric said, his tone like a gentle hand pressing down on someone’s shoulder. “I just want to know if you have room for one more.”
“What, did that organization end up with leverage over you too?” The voice on the other end paused, mildly surprised.
Edric didn’t answer the question directly.
His gaze drifted to the window and the flat gray skyline beyond it.
“I’m trying to retrieve a housecat that keeps wandering off,” he said.
Two seconds of quiet passed on the other end, followed by a short laugh. “Another sibling went rogue on you?”
The man on the other end knew exactly what Edric meant by “retrieving a cat.”
He’d watched Edric spend three meticulous months engineering the quiet destruction of several of George’s safehouses, moving without urgency and without making a sound, until George had nowhere left to retreat to and got cornered in his own safe house.
Edric intended to use the same approach with Maya.
Though, he reflected as he set his phone down on the desk after ending the call, a sister was not a brother.
The method would need to be gentler.
He couldn’t let her feel hunted.
The ideal outcome was for her to recognize the danger on her own and walk back to him willingly, right into the palm of his hand.
Maya hung up and sat for a moment, not entirely sure why, but a sudden chill climbed the length of her spine without warning.
She rubbed both hands up and down her arms and muttered quietly to herself, “I think my brother might be annoyed with me.”
