Chance still cared, at least a little, about the lives of people he knew.
Ernest could walk away from the entire Imperial Order without a second thought.
Even so, the strange female assassin had never been part of Ernest’s original plan.
He’d told her more than once to leave.
She never did.
Ernest drove like he’d lost his mind, pushing the car faster and faster, weaving through traffic until another vehicle cut him off. He slammed the brakes and shut his eyes.
So this is it.
He and Chance were dragged out and shoved into another black van.
A man was already inside, clearly waiting. The moment he saw Ernest, the hatred on his face spilled over. “Ernest. You can run, I’ll give you that.”
He tipped his chin toward Chance. “This one yours?”
Chance’s lips twitched.
He’d already figured out who Ernest really was during the drive.
He should’ve been shocked. But right now, even shock felt pointless. All that was left was a hollow calm.
“Yeah. He’s my boss,” Chance said quietly, careful not to provoke them. He glanced at their faces, then rushed to add, “I can give you intel. I can prove I’m useful. The Imperial Order’s warehouse in the south district, their overseas transactions, a shipment they haven’t moved yet. I know where all of it is.”
He listed it out one by one, and as expected, the others in the vehicle eased up on him.
They had no personal grudge against Chance.
As long as he had value, he could live a little longer. Maybe even avoid torture.
Ernest didn’t have that option.
When he was dragged out, the faces waiting for him were ones he knew well, twisted with hatred.

Over the years, the number of groups he’d crushed, enemies he’d driven into ruin or prison, easily reached into the dozens.
Every single one of them wanted him dead.
Ernest new forgot a face. Anyone he’d seen, even once, even just in a file, stayed with him.

But in their world, getting captured or killed by another group was normal.
Rescue? That was a fantasy. At most, someone might notice you were gone.
Chance gave up the idea. Head lowered, he followed along in silence, guarded on both sides.
