After all, it was inherently ridiculous for a man who ran a powerful underground organization. Ned was rumored to be a dark overlord, the kind of person parents mentioned when they wanted their children to behave. Yet he was sitting in the middle of the night with a bag of chips, complaining that he couldn’t go grocery shopping or casually leave the house.
“An ordinary guy?” Iris burst out laughing at Maya’s choice of words, her shoulders shaking. “Hahaha, don’t let anyone in the organization hear you say that.”
Jokes were jokes, but every organization had one unbreakable rule–hierarchy.
No matter how humanely a group was managed, an underground operation was still an underground operation.
Rumor had it that the boss had once been in a foul mood and personally executed several subordinates on the spot for incompetence and leaking information.
After word got out, every assassin in the organization spent weeks walking on eggshells.
Eventually, Iris came to one conclusion–bosses were best left as distant legends. Ideally, she would never meet her boss face–to–face in her entire life.
The two of them wandered around a bit longer. By now, Iris had familiarized herself with the layout of both the campus and the surrounding area. It was almost time to head back to class.
The newly arrived Somalie had certainly made an entrance. The spectacle surrounding her arrival had left the surrounding students openly marveling.
Inside the classroom, Somalie was directing Kaia as she arranged her desk.
The desktop had to be spotless. The chair had to be positioned at the perfect angle. Even the order of the pens inside the pen holder had to follow specific rules.
Watching her bossy attitude from a distance, Jonathan frowned.
Kaia was running around nonstop, a thin sheen of sweat forming on her forehead.
Jonathan finally couldn’t take it anymore. He walked over and spoke through clenched teeth, “What’s your name?” He stared directly at Somalie.
Somalie casually recited an absurdly long string of names.
Jonathan remembered none of them and froze for a few seconds.
“Never mind.” Somalie rolled her eyes at him and lazily admired her desk. “I suppose it was

“Your name is Somalie, right?” Jonathan took a deep breath, trying to maintain the last shred of his manners. “I can find someone else to help you. Kaia came here to study, not to be your maid.”
Somalie waved dismissively. “Sorry, what are you saying? I’m a foreigner. I don’t understand.”
The corner of Jonathan’s mouth twitched.
Just then, Maya and Iris walked through the classroom door.
The moment Somalie spotted them, her tone instantly softened. She pointed toward Jonathan and said, “Iris, Maya… oh, your name is Maya, right?”
Maya nodded.
“Get him away from me.” Somalie slapped the desk, making the carefully arranged pen holder wobble. “He’s contaminating the fresh air around me.”
Jonathan frowned. “You-”
Kaia hurriedly pulled him back a few steps and apologized. “Sorry about that, Ms. Fernando.”
Watching the scene unfold, Maya felt a little emotional. Kaia really had grown up.
In the past, she would have been pointing at Somalie’s nose and arguing until every last point had been settled.
Now, she had actually learned how to step back first.
“Maya…” After settling Jonathan down, Kaia turned toward her. Her expression was complicated. “Are you working for her, too?”
“Yes,” Maya answered readily.
For some reason, seeing that Maya occupied the same position she did brought Kaia an unexpected sense of relief.
She knew she probably shouldn’t feel that way, but she couldn’t stop comparing them.
“Oh, right.” After exchanging a few casual words, Kaia asked, “You never went back to… the Jacksons?”
Maya didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she looked at her leisurely. “Do you want to go back? I think Thomas would be very happy to see you.”

There was also a flicker of panic from having her thoughts exposed.
