Phoebe looked at her friends nervously. “Do you guys think there’s a chance I won’t make it back alive from this banquet?”
Somalie was busy taking pictures of the desserts on her desk, carefully adjusting the lighting and trying three different angles. She sounded completely unconcerned.
“The Clarks don’t eat people. What are you scared of? I’ll be there too. If things go south, I’ll cover for you.”
Vincent was more interested in something else. Tilting his head, he looked at Phoebe. “What does your family do, anyway? Getting invited by the Clarks isn’t exactly ordinary.”
Phoebe had always kept a low profile in class. She rarely spoke and rarely joined the crowds during breaks.
The fact that she had received an invitation genuinely surprised quite a few people.
Several classmates turned their attention toward her at once, reassessing a variable they’d overlooked for a long time.
Feeling awkward under the scrutiny, Phoebe answered honestly, “My family works in pharmaceutical and medical research. The Clarks have businesses in those industries, so our family was included among the guests.”
Jenny overheard the conversation but didn’t join in. The thoughts running through her head were completely different from everyone else’s.
The Clarks.
Toby.
Isn’t that Maya’s family?
And yet, strangely enough, Maya’s family background had never become a major topic of discussion at school.
The main reason was that Toby was simply too nasty.
They were in a school where freedom of speech was practically unlimited, and students could get away with almost anything.
Yet somehow, nobody dared say a single bad word about him. That alone spoke volumes about how intimidating he was.

Even years after graduation, there still wasn’t a single forum post about him anywhere on the school forum.
Until now, Jenny never dared speak carelessly about him.
She couldn’t help it. Raymond had left a psychological scar on her back then.
That perpetually lazy expression. That complete lack of interest in anything. The casual way he’d shot one of his own subordinates.
And then the way he’d slipped his hands into his pockets and changed expressions at lightning speed as though nothing had happened.
He was really terrifying.
Jenny was genuinely afraid of Maya’s family.
Whenever conversations drifted even slightly toward Maya’s family, Jenny immediately played dead.
She had maintained that careful distance for a long time.
She and Maya were indeed friends, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t scared.
Being friends with someone from a family like that required nerves of steel. Jenny’s chosen survival strategy was selective deafness.
Meanwhile, at the Clark Residence, Maya sat in the living room staring at a stack of invitations Jake had just brought in. The gold–embossed cards were neatly arranged on a tray, their covers decorated with elegant patterns. Curious, she picked one up and examined it.
She had never seen invitations like those before.
“Ms. Clark, aren’t you going shopping for a dress?” Jake asked with a smile. Having watched her grow up, he spoke with familiarity, “It’s a family gathering, after all. You’ll be attending in a few days, won’t you?”
Maya thought about it. “I’m not sure.
“I’m currently working as someone’s servant. It’ll depend on whether she has time to come.”
If Somalie had time, then Maya had time.
Jake fell silent for a few seconds before asking, “Whose servant are you?”

During those seconds, countless thoughts flashed through his mind.
The Clarks‘ heiress was working as someone else’s servant.
That concept violently collided with his professional worldview.

Still, he had served the Clarks for decades and had seen far stranger things. His expression quickly returned to normal, and he kept smiling.
“A young lady from overseas,” Maya explained. “By the way, will there be a lot of people I know at the banquet?”
“Probably not that many.” Jake sorted through the invitation list as he spoke. “If you have friends you like, you’re welcome to bring them along.”
“…Forget it.”
Maya imagined the expressions of everyone she knew if they received a Clarks‘ invitation.
Excitement probably wouldn’t be their first reaction. Terror would. It would feel more like receiving a formal notice of execution.
Recently, Maya’s school life had revolved almost entirely around Somalie.
