Chapter 365 What Does Your Family Do?

That didn’t stop her from finding the whole thing dreadfully dull. For people like them, an art exhibition wasn’t an aesthetic experience–it was just another boring social occasion.
“You don’t understand paintings?” A girl beside her, bored and looking to feel Maya out, tossed out the topic. “So what do you usually do?”
Maya counted off her dull daily routine. “Classes. Exams.”
“If I do badly on a test, my whole family looks down on me when I get home, and then on weekends I do missions, and if I botch those, the team leader chews me out…”
“What kind of missions?” the other girl pressed, her tone carrying pure curiosity.
Maya paused, then said vaguely, “Just some cross–border business, or some jobs within our circle.”
“Wow, you’re already involved in the family enterprise at such a young age?”
If Maya wasn’t lying, then they were genuinely a little impressed and envious.
Their families had companies too, but most wouldn’t let them touch the business until they were adults. Getting involved in cross–border affairs at 15 was genuinely rare.
“My family only lets me help manage things alongside the others for now.
“You’re amazing.”
“That outfit of yours really is unexpected.” A girl looked over the layered tiers of her pink poofy dress and couldn’t help laughing. “The invitation did say formal attire, didn’t it?”
Maya looked down at her own dress. “I didn’t know. Nobody told me.” She really had been stuffed into this outfit by Somalie on short notice that very afternoon, and she hadn’t read a single one of the Clark
invitations.

She came off a little airheaded, answering whatever they asked without circling around or trading barbs.
After a full round of conversation, these young ladies, so accustomed to insincere social fencing, inevitably found a girl this blunt and straightforward a little boring.
They quickly moved on to chatting about their own daily lives and matters concerning their family enterprises.
From haute couture to study–abroad trips, and on to how their family trust funds were allocated.
Maya listened, utterly bored.
Occasionally, one of them would remember to ask, “What does your family do?”
Every time this happened, Maya would fall tactically silent.
The question was too hard.

Her family’s business spanned several gray areas, not one of which could be summed up in a single sentence on an occasion like this.
Annie could tell she wasn’t good at socializing.
Her only intention had been to give May a quick tour of the room and help the girl expand her social circle, saving her from sitting like a wallflower in some forgotten corner at future banquets.
Seeing how thoroughly bored Maya looked, Annie gave her a little wave and said with a smile:
“All right, Maya, go find your friend for now. The night’s still young.”
Maya had indeed made a round of introductions with her, so at this she readily nodded.

“Whose family is she from, Annie? I’ve never seen her before. She seems pretty shy, didn’t volunteer a single word.”
“Is she new? But this kind of old–money family gathering wouldn’t send an invitation to those newcomers.”
Once Maya had walked far enough away, the girls all started asking, the curiosity in their voices completely unconcealed.
“She’s a Clark. This banquet is her family’s,” Annie answered offhandedly.
There was a moment of silence.
The girls all turned at once to glance in the direction Maya had gone, then turned back just as quickly.
They were recalling the contents of their just–finished chat with this Clark daughter.
They fell, with one accord, into a tidy silence.
Nobody spoke for a while.
The instant Annie gave her answer, everyone understood why Maya chose silence whenever she hit a hard–to–answer question.
So, her family was in the hereditary killing business.
Oh, that wasn’t quite accurate, either.
