Chapter 393 For You, A Thousand Times Over
Finished
Alfred couldn’t tell this was a dream or real. His head was full of nothing but what he’d seen–her lying there, alone, in that place. The only one dead was his sister.
In every cycle, Alfred had no memories at all. Every previous experience of seeing her die had been gently wiped away by some unseen hand, leaving no trace. By the time he remembered, all he ever saw was her body.
He was always a step too late. If he’d remembered sooner, could he have saved her?
The question cut him open over and over like a knife.
For the first time, Alfred touched something that felt like hate. He couldn’t stop hating himself, hating that
man.
Was the whole point of this endless loop just to make him watch her die again and again?
Alfred stood in front of Maya, sobbing out the same question.
How am I supposed to save you?
His face was streaked with tears. The face that had always been so composed was wrecked with a despair she’d never seen on him.
Maya had never imagined he could look like this. She stood frozen in his grip, biting the corner of her lip.
Her own eyes were filling up.
She hadn’t wanted to cry. She’d died too many times. She thought she’d gotten used to it, that she’d already cried herself dry.
But after looping for so long, when someone finally walked up to her, knew what she’d been through, and wanted to save her, Maya found she couldn’t keep the grief down.
It turned out she wasn’t as tough as she’d thought she was.
Alfred looked at her, his favorite person and the sister he loved most, and stood there helplessly.
“Alfred.” Tears were running down her face. She fisted her hands in his shirt and choked the words out. “I want to know too. How am I supposed to save you?”
Every time she died, it hurt. Every time she died, she’d thought about how useless she was. She wanted to save him. That was all she wanted.
Maya forced the tears back down.
“Alfred.” She kept pressing down the sob climbing up her throat and held him tighter. “Stop being sad over me. I’ll tell you a secret. It actually doesn’t hurt. I don’t need to be saved.”
She pulled back a little and looked into his eyes.

Chapter 393 for You, A Thousand Times Over
You don’t have to feel bad for me. This time, let me be the one who saves you.”

She got like that sometimes, dramatic in the way a kid gets dramatic, with that stubborn earnest streak. She wasn’t really saying any of it to him. She was saying it to herself.
“You have to trust me.”
Something occurred to her, and she poked his cheek, light, with a kind of childish brightness, as if she weren’t saying goodbye, just teasing him the way she always did.
“I always liked hiding behind you. For my whole life.”
That hadn’t changed even now. Maya always defaulted to hiding behind him. She’d just figured Alfred would step up and protect her, the way he always did.
Whenever someone came at her, her first move was to duck behind her brother. It took him being gone for her to realize that without him, she’d have to learn to face things on her own.
“I’ve always been a coward. I’m not strong. But just for tonight, Alfred.”
She looked up at him, her eyes bright.
“For you, I’ll be unstoppable.”
Someone as scared and as helpless as her would be unstoppable for him.
If it hadn’t been for these loops, if he hadn’t watched her walk off to die over and over, Alfred would never have known what she was willing to do for him.
Somewhere in the haze, he remembered. Once, in some loop, she’d come to find him. She’d asked if he’d read The Kite Runner. He hadn’t followed at the time/
“Anyway, I…” Maya had said back then, trailing off, looking at him with that lost expression. She’d swallowed the rest of the sentence in a hurry.
Now he understood what she hadn’t said. The Kite Runner had one line in it that people always
remembered.
“For you, a thousand times over.”
“Anyway, I…”
“For you, a thousand times over.”
There were no born brave people. Only people willing to throw themselves at something for love. Maya was willing to try, over and over. Not because she was brave enough. Because she loved him.
