This Time Be the Villain’s Favorite Daughter

Chapter 396 A Long Dream

“Leave it for now.”

The system paused, as if it were weighing something.

“Oh, Maya, the time penalty kicks in after midnight. Are you ready?”

Maya was silent for a beat.

She tipped her head back to look at the empty sky. Moonlight caught on her bloodied face.

Rimaned

She thought about it for a second and then accused the system flatly, “That’s so mean. Did you really have to tell me that right when I was finally happy?”

“Don’t worry. No Janesic this time.”

The system didn’t have the heart to actually send her off to fight dinosaurs.

Maya huffed and let it drop. At this point, she had the routine down. Aside from how rough the first time had been, she basically knew the drill now.

The system, meanwhile, was thinking hard about what to do with Alfred. It was the consciousness of this world. Its whole reason for existing was to keep things stable, to make sure every storyline tracked along its set path.

Maya alone had been enough of a headache. The protagonist had been swapped out, and now, a villain had picked up memories from previous loops because of her resets. This whole world was a mess.

Characters with memory were a horror story from where the system was sitting. It couldn’t predict what they were going to do. On top of that, Maya kept resetting, kept reloading, kept yanking the timeline back. Sooner or later, it was going to fracture.

It took Maya a long while to push herself up off the ground. Her legs had gone a little numb. She pulled her jacket tighter and zipped it all the way up to hide the blood and the cuts as best she could.

She fished out her phone and ordered a rideshare, ready to be home.

She swiped her finger a couple of times, typed in the address and confirmed the ride. As soon as the driver clocked the location and saw her standing there covered in blood, the order got canceled.

Another car picked up the ping a minute later, took one look at her, and peeled away.

Maya glanced down at herself. She was soaked in blood, her clothes torn, hair loose, face streaked with grime.

She really did look like she’d just walked out of a murder scene. Of course, no rideshare driver. to put her in their car.

She stood on the side of the road. The wind blew through, and she scrunched her shoulders against the cold. She watched the screen flash no drivers available and made a small poury fact

Chapter 396 A Long Dream

In the end, she had to trudge down to the corner and grudgingly scan the QR code on a bike share.

When the bike got going the wind caught her jacket and pushed it back behind her. Her cuts stung but it was bearable. The wind on the ride home tasted almost sweet.

Watching all of this, the system felt an unexpected kind of warmth, like it was watching its own kid stumble through something hard and clumsy and come out the other side.

“You can relax now. It’s over, Maya. But Alfred seems to be a problem.”

Maya’s head came up. “What problem?”

“I think I’ve told you. Resetting this much, rolling time back over and over, it tangles the timeline.”

She nodded on reflex. “I think you did mention that.”

She’d been so deep in grinding the boss fight that she hadn’t really listened. The sky could’ve fallen, a wouldn’t have mattered until she’d brought Alfred back.

“Alfred, he…”

The system trailed off and instinctively pulled up the storylines from other timelines in this world. It scanned through the dense streams of data, the tangled intersections, all the different Mayas existing i those different versions.

It muttered to itself.

“How is he rewriting the story like this…”

There was something else under the confusion, something it couldn’t quite name. The whole thing was outside of expectations, and yet, somehow, not entirely surprising.

“Although the way this timeline plays out from here, this might actually work out fine?”

It was just talking to itself. Maya had no idea what was going on with it. She tipped her head to the side. The wind caught the loose hair at her forehead.

“What are you even talking about?”

The system went quiet on her again.

“Hello?” she called out, but there was no response.

She sighed. When this syster had nothing to say, it would go silent.
