After she said her goodbyes to the team, Bonnie made her way to the door. Helen caught up to her, walking beside her and reaching out to check her forehead.
“Should you go to the hospital? Maybe you need an IV or something,” Helen murmured, worry plain in her voice.
Bonnie shook her head. “Just a cold and a fever. I’ll be fine once I get some rest. If I still feel horrible tomorrow, I’ll think about it.”
Helen knew Bonnie hated hospitals, hated having needles stuck in her arm. “Are you sure you can get a cab? Or I can ask Ned to drive you. He’s nearby and his boss never minds.”
Bonnie mustered a faint smile, but her exhaustion showed. “No need. Someone’s already coming to pick me up.”
Helen instantly caught on and let out an exaggerated “Ohhh.” “Well, that’s perfect. Let me at least see who it is. I promise, I won’t tease you about it.”
Bonnie just nodded, looking distracted and a little spaced out. Her thoughts were a tangled mess, her body so tired she could barely stand. Down in the lobby, she landed on a sofa in the waiting area and leaned into Helen’s side, wrapping her arms around her waist.
Helen let Bonnie lay her head on her lap, her hand moving in slow, calming circles on Bonnie’s arm. Bonnie could smell the faint scent of citrus on her, so comforting and familiar, and she almost dozed off right there. Before she knew it, someone was smoothing her hair, and she heard voices above her, the words fuzzy but recognizable.
“I’ll leave her with the officer. Make sure Bonnie gets looked after, okay? She rarely gets sick, but when she does, it drags on. She’s allergic to penicillin but that’s it otherwise...”
Aiken nodded, listening carefully. He gently scooped Bonnie up from Helen’s lap. The heat radiating from her skin surprised him. Even her breath was too warm. He held her carefully, the back of his hand brushing her forehead.
She was in a daze, completely out of it from the fever. He’d hurried over straight from work, not even changing out of his police uniform. Bonnie, maybe because the metal on his shoulders was cold, pressed her cheek against his chest, searching for comfort.
