Lawrence wanted to clear things up with Bonnie as soon as possible, to explain everything and somehow win her back. But in this heavy silence, his determination faded, bit by bit, until there was nothing left.

Maybe he’d wait until he’d figured out the whole truth. Bonnie was sick right now, and the last thing he wanted was to stress her out even more.

Once the worst of her illness passed, Bonnie felt a little better. She lifted her eyes toward Lawrence, ready to say something, but just then, Abbot walked in. He carried a tray of breakfast, barely glanced at the bed, nodded, and turned to leave. Only at the last second did he glance back through the open door before closing it behind him.

Lawrence had already gotten off the bed. Now he was kneeling on the carpet at Bonnie’s side, holding her hand, practically begging her to eat a few bites of breakfast.

Bonnie’s face was set and distant, exhaustion weighing down her whole expression.

Abbot barely recognized this version of Lawrence. Back when they were in the States, Lawrence almost never went home. He only went back to see Hannah for a meal when he absolutely had to. Even then, it never lasted long before the two of them started fighting.

Mostly, it was Hannah who lost her temper. She could smash up their enormous house all she wanted, while Lawrence just sat off to the side, head down, smoking, looking completely defeated.

It was especially bad before she had the baby. At the time, Abbot had just started working with Lawrence, trying to build something together, and he always found these situations impossible to deal with. The Lane family seemed endlessly patient with Hannah, but Lawrence just kept his distance, putting up wall after wall between them.

No matter how wild Hannah got, no matter how many hospital trips she caused, Lawrence never acted like he did now—gentle, patient, quiet, almost desperate to make things right.

He’d never tried to coax anybody with this kind of care. He just shut down, closed himself off.

Not once did Abbot see Lawrence cook a meal.
