When Bonnie finished her swim, she checked her phone and found a few new messages waiting.

Her team lead had replied to the drawings she’d sent that morning, saying he’d be at the office in the afternoon and they could meet to go over everything together.

Another message was from Daniel, her latest matchmaking date.

Are you free tonight? Dinner and a movie? Maybe Japanese food? It's not spicy.

Bonnie ran a towel through her damp hair. She wasn’t surprised that even after turning people down, some guys just wouldn’t give up.

Back in college, even when she and Lawrence were officially together, she still had admirers. Lawrence always liked to joke that everyone wanted to “steal his girl.” He acted so cocky about it.

He’d come up behind her, loop his arms around her waist, grab her phone and—one word at a time—type out replies in his own boyfriend voice, warning the other guys to back off.

At the time, Bonnie’s profile picture on social media was a photo of her holding hands with Lawrence. He never let her set anything to "visible for three days only," so anyone who looked saw a feed full of cute date night pics. Not that it stopped anyone from trying. The attention brought out a jealous streak in Lawrence that could really drive her nuts. It was always her who took the heat for it.

Lawrence could get pretty wild about that stuff.

Bonnie didn’t respond right away. She peeled off her black one-piece swimsuit, changed into a loose shirt and wide-leg pants, blow-dried her hair until it was almost dry, grabbed her bag, and headed out.

Waiting by the curb for her ride, she heard the rumble of a sports car engine from up the street and instinctively glanced over.

A dark green Koenigsegg Jesko cruised past.

Cabinda was full of luxury cars, but this brand always caught her eye. She actually knew a bit about it, too.

Lawrence was obsessed with collecting cars and had a particular soft spot for Koenigseggs. He always said they were the most extreme, pure, high-performance production cars in the world, each one handmade and engineered for real enthusiasts.
