With only one month left before her grad school entrance exams, Bonnie stuck to a tight study schedule. From morning until night, unless she was eating or resting, she barely took a break. She left everything about the online mess to Patton, her lawyer, so she could fully focus on her review sessions. Her phone stayed on silent, blocking out both calls and WeChat alerts.
During a rare break, she finally picked up her phone and saw missed calls from Patton and Aiken. Her WeChat was overflowing with unread messages.
Her heart pounded as she called Patton back, half afraid some new disaster had happened. Things had been pretty calm online lately, but she couldn’t help worrying that Hannah might pull something. She’d already fallen victim to Hannah’s schemes—both obvious and sneaky—more times than she liked to admit.
Patton answered almost right away, his voice calm and reassuring. “Bonnie, I’ve got good news.”
Relief rushed over her, and for a second her heart dropped, then immediately raced even faster. She stumbled over her words. “What... what good news?”
Patton sounded amused. “You must be in deep study mode if you haven’t checked the news. Take a look when you have time. Honestly, it’s better if we talk everything through in person with Aiken at the police station. Too much to cover on a call. Are you free?”
Bonnie was absolutely free. As soon as she and Patton agreed on a time, she jumped up to get dressed and head out.
Pulling on her scarf as she stepped into the hallway, she noticed piles of luggage stacked outside a neighbor’s door.
Someone was clearly moving in.
A girl was scrubbing the door handle of apartment 1207 next door with a wet wipe, muttering under her breath. Bonnie caught her words—something about the landlord getting lipstick all over the handle.
Bonnie paused, thought for a second, then decided to say hello. “Hey, are you moving in?”
The girl smiled. “Yeah, that’s me. You live next door? Hope we get along.”
