Three Years Later, He Came Back Begging novel Chapter 209

Bonnie always seemed a little distant, but she was so quick to cry. She’d get teary over the smallest things, even just watching a kid standing under the flag and swearing an oath at a school assembly. Her heart felt everything a little too much. She had this deep well of empathy, but she never let it show. Most times she’d just avoid getting involved, so afraid to really let her feelings out into the world.

Lawrence was the only one who truly noticed. He saw right through her walls and gently encouraged her, telling her it was okay to cry if she needed to, to just say whatever she was thinking, no matter what.

One time, the two of them were out shopping. They were crossing to the other side of the street through an underground tunnel. The stairs were long and there was no escalator. Up ahead, a young mom was struggling to lug a stroller, her baby perched right inside. She’d go up a couple of steps and have to stop to catch her breath. Lawrence saw Bonnie slow down, hesitating, like she was thinking whether she should help. He reached over, ruffled her hair, and then—without saying a word—walked over and helped the young mom carry the stroller up.

The mom beamed at them and thanked him, even joked that they made such a cute couple. Bonnie blushed, and after the woman had gone, she snuggled up to Lawrence, arms around his waist, and looked up at him with a big, bright smile. “How did you know I wanted to help her?”

Lawrence thought about it for a moment. “You never stopped watching her, especially her hands when she kept wiping the sweat away. If I couldn’t tell you’ve got a soft heart by now, I might as well give up.”

Bonnie’s eyes got really shiny, like she was about to cry again, but this time it wasn’t from sadness. Lawrence leaned down and kissed her, pulling her close as they kept walking together.

He figured it was just a small thing, a nice moment among many. But later that night, out of nowhere, Bonnie burst into tears in his arms. She wouldn’t tell him why. Lawrence just kept holding her and whispering to her, until finally, with a red face and a shaky voice, she let out what she was feeling.

“I know I always call you a jerk,” she said, voice barely more than a whisper, cheeks still wet and pink, “but really I think you’re an incredible person. You’re so responsible, and careful, and kind. You wait for the pregnant girl from upstairs every time we take the elevator, no matter how slow she is. When you’re driving, if you see a traffic cone in the road, you stop the car and go move it yourself. Little things... things most people probably wouldn’t even notice.”

She buried her face in his neck, skin damp, both of them holding on a little tighter.
