Right now, Bonnie just couldn’t bring herself to think about any of that. She’d barely gotten through one crisis, and grad school exams were already breathing down her neck. Her love life never seemed to make it onto the priority list.
All she knew was that, so far, she didn’t mind hanging out with Aiken.
As she stared at her phone, another message from Helen popped up. “Especially since you’ll move to Oasinia if you get in. Long-distance is hard enough. Plus, Aiken’s job isn’t exactly easy. Honestly, I think this will really test your relationship.”
Bonnie smiled at that. People always thought Helen was carefree and blunt, but the truth was, she caught onto everything. She saw right through people and situations, maybe that’s why she just did whatever made her happy.
Bonnie typed back, “I will. I promise I’m not going to rush this. Don’t worry.”
Jumping into a new relationship without thinking it through wasn’t fair to anybody. If she and Aiken were really going to give this a shot, Bonnie wanted to be sure—really sure—before she said yes to him.
She finished her chat with Helen, got up, did her morning routine, then settled in for another round of studying. Around nine, the snowfall picked up, coming down even thicker and faster. Aiken drove right into the garage.
Bonnie grabbed her bag and took the elevator down.
Aiken was waiting for her by his car, still in his police uniform.
When Bonnie walked over, he opened the door for her. She noticed right away that he wasn’t wearing his usual wide smile. Instead, his face was a little tense, a little heavy.
Her stomach fluttered with nerves. “What’s wrong?” she asked quietly. “Aren’t you supposed to be off today? Why are you in uniform?”
“Let’s get in the car first. It’s nothing big,” Aiken said, his voice softer than usual. He waited for Bonnie to sit, then walked around and got in on the driver’s side.
He didn’t waste any time or sugarcoat things. As he started driving, Aiken explained, “We don't have enough evidence to bring Hannah in yet. We tried calling her a few days ago with no luck. Today, we finally got through, but it was Lawrence who picked up.”
He drew a slow breath. “He told us Hannah is in the hospital. She tried to kill herself. She cut her wrist, hit the artery, lost a lot of blood. Nerves and tendons are messed up, too. She’s not stable, not just physically, but emotionally. If we want to question her, we’ll have to go there in person.”
