Three Years Later, He Came Back Begging novel Chapter 219

Bonnie honestly had no idea. She’d never really thought about it, never asked, and Aiken didn’t talk much about it either.

Still, she didn’t think things were quite like that.

“We’re not even officially together yet,” she said, turning to her mom. “You and Dad really don’t need to dig into all these personal things.”

Shirley frowned. “Just asking doesn’t mean we’re against it. It’s better to know what’s going on. Your problem is you never care enough, and that’s why you end up in trouble.”

Bonnie didn’t have anything to say to that. She just focused on chopping vegetables, letting the conversation drop.

The food went onto the table dish by dish. Aiken came over to help set everything out, and when the kitchen was empty for a moment, Bonnie leaned in and lowered her voice. “Just a heads up, if my mom starts grilling you later, don’t take it to heart. They’re just getting older and love asking questions about everything.”

Aiken grinned. “No worries… Honestly, your dad already asked me earlier.”

Bonnie paused, glancing back toward the dining room. Her dad was whispering something into Shirley’s ear, and Bonnie caught a quick glimpse of surprise on her mom’s face before she smoothed it over.

Now she was completely confused. Aiken just rolled up the sleeves of his black sweater, smiled at her, and carried out the last plate.

Dinner itself was relaxed. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Shirley didn’t bring up Aiken’s family again, just chatted a bit about work and other ordinary topics.

Bonnie was still curious, but she didn’t know how to bring it up without it sounding awkward, so she decided to wait and ask Aiken when she walked him out later.

There was something else on her mind too. She hesitated, then asked, “Aiken, I don’t think you’ve ever really talked about your dad.”

A featherlight dusting of snow landed on Aiken’s lashes. His expression shifted a little, voice quiet and touched with that wintry kind of sadness. “My dad died ten years ago. He was killed in the line of duty, during a murder investigation.”

By then, they’d reached his car. A strong gust blew by and flung snowflakes all around them. Bonnie’s eyes went wide in shock. A cold little flake slipped into her eye, making it smart and water.

Aiken let out a gentle laugh, then reached over and ruffled the top of her head through her puffy hood.

“What’s with that face? Are you feeling sorry for me?”
