Odette could remember that moment like it happened yesterday. Her heart twisted up tight, her eyes went blurry, and for a second, she just couldn’t find the words. She and Lawrence used to talk about everything. Now, when they met each other’s eyes, all she could see was exhaustion and a kind of helplessness that left them both silent.
She knew this was her fault. One mistake spiraled into another, and she kept telling herself she could handle it all. In reality, she’d pushed her own kids so far that resentment grew between them. For a heartbeat, she thought about how she couldn’t let Lawrence shoulder all this pain by himself. She considered moving him away from Hannah, hiring caregivers, bringing in nannies to keep an eye on her.
If someone watched Hannah around the clock, at least nothing tragic could happen. Maybe it would be best to send Hannah to a psychiatric hospital, let professionals help her, and maybe she’d get better faster that way if she just put her foot down.
But when Odette tried to say any of this, her voice stumbled, caught up in tears. That’s when Lawrence put out his cigarette, suddenly pulled her into a hug, and said, his voice rough and holding back tears, “It’s fine, Mom, really. I’m okay. Hannah’s sick, she doesn’t mean it. Please don’t cry. Go back home, look after yourself and Dad. I’ll stay here and take care of things. Hannah can’t take medicine or go to the hospital while she’s pregnant. I’ll just try to give her what she needs.”
It was just like when Lawrence was little and always complained that Hannah tried to boss him around. Now, seeing Lawrence’s face so tired, so worn down, none of the spark he used to have left in his eyes, Odette’s heart just broke. Tears slid down her cheeks as she wondered how she had become so selfish, letting her son suffer like this and ruining his happiness with Bonnie too.
Why did karma come for her children, the innocent ones, instead of herself?
Lawrence reached out with a shaking hand and wiped her tears away. “I’m really fine, Mom. Please stop crying.”
“Lawrence, will you go see a doctor? Please? I’m really worried about you.”
