"Alright, both of you, knock it off. You do nothing but argue when you're in the same room. It's giving me a headache." Davina sighed in exasperation before turning to Bonnie. "They've been at each other's throats since they were kids. Don't mind them."
Bonnie quickly assured her she didn't mind. She was actually just taking in the dynamic between Aiken and his sister.
It was so natural and easygoing.
You could tell they really cared about each other.
Sensing Bonnie's slight awkwardness, Aiken shot a pointed look at his mom and sister, silently begging them to clear the room. Davina chuckled, grabbing her eye-rolling daughter by the arm and dragging her toward the door.
"You two catch up, sweetie. We're going to run out and grab a few things."
Bonnie stood up politely as they left. Once the door clicked shut, she sank back into her chair. Spotting a basket of apples on the nightstand, she grabbed a paring knife, peeled one, and handed it to him.
"You've been back for a while. Why didn't you call me?" she asked, genuinely feeling guilty that he was about to be discharged and she was only just finding out.
Taking a bite of the apple, Aiken murmured, "You barely had any time to study as it was. Having you come all the way here would have just been a distraction."
Bonnie pressed her lips together. "A few days wouldn't have ruined my chances. Next time... Actually, never mind. Let's just hope there isn't a next time. No more hospitals for you."
Aiken let out a soft laugh, but it didn't quite reach his eyes, failing to chase away the heavy shadow lingering over him. Recognizing his distracted state, Bonnie carefully broached the topic. "When I was walking down the hall, I saw the instructor in one of the other rooms. Did something happen?"
The moment the words left her mouth, Aiken's expression darkened. He was silent for a long moment before giving a slow nod. "My mentor, Ableson... his injuries took a turn for the worse. It's not looking good."
During the raid, Aiken had been assigned to the secondary team to lock down the stairwell, while Ableson led the breach team to kick the door in.
The suspect had fought back viciously, critically injuring Ableson before making a run for it. Hearing the chaos over the radio, Aiken had intercepted the guy and tackled him. But the suspect had backup waiting. Even after taking a brutal blow to the head with a steel pipe, Aiken had pinned the man to the ground and refused to let go.
