Three Years Later, He Came Back Begging novel Chapter 235

The voices faded away. Bonnie stood there for a moment, not catching the rest of the conversation.

Surprisingly, she felt completely calm. There was no sting of betrayal, no lingering ache.

Just as her own family and friends would take her side and judge Aiken, it was only natural for Aiken's family to look at things from a different perspective.

It was simply human nature.

Bonnie hitched the strap of her sketch bag higher on her shoulder and was about to leave when a cartoon balloon drifted out of the hallway. It was shaped like a slightly ugly, goofy frog.

Instinctively, she reached out and caught the string. Looking down, she met the eyes of little Jasper, who had come running after it.

Jasper remembered her. "Pretty lady!" he chirped cheerfully.

Right on his heels, Odette hurried into the corridor. She froze when she saw Bonnie. "Bonnie? What are you..."

For a brief, fleeting second, a wave of pleasant surprise washed over Odette. She assumed Shirley had said something to Bonnie, prompting her to come visit Lawrence. But the next second, Bonnie nodded in greeting and shattered that illusion.

"Odette. I was visiting a sick friend. I was just on my way out."

The light in Odette's eyes dimmed. She forced a smile. "I hope your friend is alright."

"They're fine," Bonnie shook her head. "Are you... is your child sick again?"

Before Odette could answer, Jasper piped up. "Not Jasper! Daddy is sick!"

Odette quickly pulled the boy into her arms. "Lawrence caught a bad case of pneumonia from a fever. It's nothing serious, just a few days in the hospital."

Bonnie pretended not to care. Casting her eyes downward, she handed the balloon back to Jasper and politely excused herself.
