Hiding behind a pillar a short distance away, Lawrence’s heart pounded against his ribs. Even in the chaotic, noisy airport terminal, the heavy thud in his chest was deafening.
He hadn't slept a wink last night. The words he had overheard in the supermarket kept looping in his mind.
"The northern snowfields are so beautiful, I want to explore everywhere..."
"But that's Silver Ridge, a powder snow paradise..."
The realization that Bonnie was going on a trip with another man had kept him tossing and turning, an agonizing ache settling deep in his chest.
He hadn't come to stop her. But his body had moved of its own accord. He had checked every single flight, certain she was planning to ring in the New Year with Aiken. Today was the only logical departure date.
He had been waiting since the early hours of the morning, subjecting himself to the masochistic need to see if she was really traveling alone with another man.
But why was she alone?
Where was Aiken?
She was carrying a massive backpack and dragging a heavy snowboard bag, struggling to lift it over the curbs. He almost stepped forward half a dozen times, but forced himself to stay planted.
He had no right.
Lawrence tilted his head back, suddenly finding the airport air suffocating. Couples milled about everywhere, checking their bags and heading through security together.
If she and Aiken were supposed to be on this trip, why was he a no-show?
Did he back out?
How could he just abandon her...
How could he do the exact same thing that he had done...
A sharp, piercing pain ripped through his chest. His hands trembled uncontrollably. Gripping his wrist to steady himself, he pulled out his phone and dialed his uncle's number.
He had spent the entire night breaking down, finally forcing himself to accept reality. While waiting at the airport, he had braced himself for this moment. Just one last look. That was all he wanted.
But now, Aiken was a no-show, and Bonnie was boarding that flight to the snowy north all by herself.
An uncontrollable wave of panic washed over him.
The northern frontier had been hit by severe blizzards recently. Roads were closed everywhere. Tour vans couldn't get into the scenic areas, and tourists unfamiliar with the icy roads were crashing rental cars. Even heavy-duty off-road vehicles were getting stuck in the drifts. Stranded travelers were forced to drag their luggage through the snow, with many women barely able to stand upright in the gale-force winds.
The weather and road conditions were a nightmare.
There were even viral videos of avalanches at the Silver Ridge ski resort caused by reckless off-piste skiers.
Traveling so far, entirely alone, loaded down with heavy luggage and ski gear.
Could she really handle it?
