Bonnie finally let herself relax. She’d been feeling drained lately, and some time off was exactly what she needed.

After work, she grabbed a bite to eat on her way home. When she reached the entrance to her apartment complex, her eyes drifted over to the dumpster out of habit.

The night before, she’d gone all the way back home, then doubled back outside, hoping for a second look at the box she’d thrown out. But it was already gone.

The older folks who sorted through the garbage always worked fast.

They never left you a chance to change your mind.

Maybe that was for the best, Bonnie thought.

Once something’s tossed, it’s gone for good.

Felton had picked out a mall that wasn’t exactly close to the pool, so Bonnie headed out a bit earlier than usual. When she walked into the coffee shop, there were still three minutes until their meeting time.

She spotted Felton right away by the window, his skin a bit tan, a casual athletic vibe to the way he sat.

Helen must have sent him her photo, because as soon as Bonnie stepped inside, Felton stood up with a friendly smile.

Bonnie smiled back and took the seat across from him.

“You look even better in person than in your pictures,” Felton said, rubbing the back of his head, a little shy. “I didn’t know what you liked, so I didn’t order anything yet. Not even for myself.”

Bonnie’s lips curled in a gentle smile. “Anything’s fine. I’ll go place the order. I promised you this one’s on me.”

Felton grinned, flashing all his teeth. “Don’t even think about it. If Ned and Helen heard you paid, they’d have my head.”

Bonnie let it go and ordered a latte. Felton grabbed his phone and went up to the counter. There was a young guy in a crisp suit ahead of him, busy talking on the phone.

Felton glanced at the cakes in the display and turned to call out, “Bonnie, did you have dinner after your swim? Want to split a piece of cake?”
