The rest of the drive went smoothly. When they passed a checkpoint, they had to hand over their IDs and pull down their masks for the security cameras. Bonnie tried to catch a glimpse of the passenger's face, but the man was incredibly cautious, angling himself perfectly.
He didn't expose a single inch of his features.
Bonnie rubbed her temples, feeling ridiculous. Maybe it was just the fact that they were roughly the same height and bundled up so heavily that it gave her a false impression.
It was just an illusion.
She pulled her attention back to the present, noticing the scenery beginning to shift, and picked up her phone to snap more pictures. Victor announced that they would reach the village in about twenty minutes.
Hvitland was a village divided into an old and new section. Bonnie had booked a bed-and-breakfast in the old village to experience the charm of staying in a traditional wooden cabin. During the day, she could carpool or take a shuttle straight to the ski resort.
Victor dropped Bonnie off at the entrance of her B&B first, helping her carry her luggage inside. Bonnie stood in the courtyard, photographing the snow piling up on the wooden swings against the backdrop of distant, majestic mountains.
"Take a breather, miss. I'll come pick you up before sunset. I'm going to drop Mr. Silent off now, though I don't even know where he's staying since he hasn't said a word this whole trip."
Bonnie let out a soft laugh and nodded. But surprisingly, Victor returned a few minutes later, with the aforementioned "Mr. Silent" trailing right behind him.
Lawrence had a backpack slung over one shoulder. From behind his dark lenses, his gaze locked onto Bonnie's back. She was wearing a pale yellow puffer coat that fell to her calves, holding her phone up to capture the faint pink hues painting the distant sky.
She definitely hadn't recognized him.
Victor hollered at the B&B owner, who was shoveling snow in the yard. "Got any vacancies? My guy here didn't book a room."
The owner was well-acquainted with the local drivers. He shrugged and signaled that he was full, pointing them toward the place across the street, mentioning that he hadn't seen anyone check in over there all day.
Having no other choice, Victor led Lawrence across the road. Luck was on their side; they snatched the last available standard room.
