Stepping out of the detention center, Bonnie stood under the bright sun, turning back to glance at the heavy iron gates that were now securely sealed shut.
A single door separated the blinding light from the suffocating darkness.
Hannah's final words had sent Bonnie's mind into a violent tailspin. The early spring sun suddenly felt far too harsh, as if the glare was melting her eyes.
Why else would the ice inside her turn to water and spill down her cheeks?
Bonnie raised a hand to wipe away the tears, turning on her heel to head toward the parking lot. Patton was waiting for her. When he saw her approach, a deeply relieved smile spread across his face.
The case had finally reached its conclusion. All his endless legwork hadn't been for nothing.
He waved his phone in the air. "Bonnie, I've got more good news. Hannah recorded a video before she turned herself in and had a friend post it on her social media. It's blowing up online. All those toxic fans who refused to believe their idol was a criminal have completely shut their mouths..."
Bonnie barely processed a word he said, just nodding absently. Patton assumed the emotional toll of the meeting was just weighing heavily on her, so he didn't press the issue. He gave her a few quick legal reminders before getting into his car and driving off.
She slid into the driver's seat and slumped over the steering wheel, unable to pull herself together for a long time.
Hannah had requested this meeting. She had said so much, but only that final sentence held any real weight.
Lawrence was dying.
Bonnie pressed a clenched fist against her chest. Her heart was hammering violently against her ribs, stirring up an unspeakable dread. She felt incredibly panicked, her thoughts spiraling out of control.
The visitation time had been strictly limited. Hannah had dropped that earth-shattering bombshell and was immediately escorted away by the guards before she could even explain *why* he was dying.
