Three Years Later, He Came Back Begging novel Chapter 3

Bonnie barely touched her food. The only thing she took a bite of was the little mooncake the restaurant handed out for free.

She didn’t need anyone’s money, and she definitely wasn’t going to pretend she owed Lawrence for some awkward dinner he decided to pay for, three years after their breakup, with both his ex and her blind date at the table.-

Bonnie picked up her purse and got to her feet. “Daniel, I’ve got somewhere to be. I’m heading out.”

Daniel was still stuck on what the waiter had said earlier. He saw Bonnie move for the door and scrambled to grab his car keys, ready to catch up. But as he glanced back, the man who paid their bill caught his attention again.

That man was staring straight at them.

Daniel gave him a polite nod then hurried after Bonnie.

She was outside, flagging down a taxi. Her slender silhouette stood out: a smoky gray top, striped sash cinched at her waist, and a flowing gray-blue tie-dye skirt. Her hair was clipped loosely at the back, a few strands slipping free in the summer evening.

She really was beautiful. And not just that, she had the whole package — the only daughter of a well-off local family in Cabinda. Her dad worked as a director at the bureau of housing, her mom was a star teacher at a top school.

Bonnie was only twenty-three, fresh out of Cabinda University, her degree as sharp as her looks. She’d landed a job straight from campus at the School of Architecture and Design. And as luck would have it, Daniel’s real estate company happened to be a major client there.

It was all too obvious their bosses hoped something would spark between them. Arranging these kinds of setups in the same industry was just how things went.

When Daniel first saw her photo, he thought girls that pretty weren’t cut out for a real relationship, much less marriage. But meeting Bonnie in person totally changed his mind.

With a face like hers, he could forgive anything.

She’d been quiet, almost cold, barely talking through dinner. Daniel figured that was just something beautiful women could get away with.

He walked up awkwardly. “Bonnie, let me drive you home. Where do you live?”

If Bonnie hadn’t just started her job, hadn’t been in that weird haze of being new and wanting to keep the peace, she never would’ve come tonight. She was here simply because she didn’t want to make trouble with her boss.

But dinner was enough.

“I’ll head back by myself, Daniel.”
