Every morning, Bonnie visited the hospital to keep Lawrence company. She sat by his bed and recounted every memory of their relationship that still lingered in her mind. She thought she had forgotten some things, but once she started talking, she realized the details were still crystal clear, right down to the trivial fragments of their daily lives.
She brought up the time they tried watching a suspenseful horror movie. Bonnie had been terrified, so Lawrence covered her eyes with his hands. When she asked if the scary part was over, he lied and said yes. She pulled his hands away, only to be met with the most terrifying jump scare on the giant screen.
Furious and frightened, Bonnie burst into tears and refused to watch the rest of the film. Lawrence spent the entire night trying to coax a smile out of her, but to no avail. The next morning, he went into overdrive to make amends, scrubbing the apartment spotless and driving across the city just to buy her favorite breakfast.
She talked about the time she agreed to play a co-op video game with him. She ended up losing to an online opponent and threw a massive tantrum. Lawrence laughed, asking why she was so competitive over a game with no real stakes. Bonnie stubbornly insisted she had to win, refusing to accept that her skills were terrible. If she was getting crushed by the enemy, Lawrence had to fight two opponents at once, which made her feel useless.
Amused, Lawrence spent hours helping her practice, but Bonnie simply wasn't cut out for gaming. She didn't even enjoy it; she was just doing it to spend time with him. Assuming the phase was over, he stopped asking her to play. But in the middle of the night, he woke up to find his arms empty. He called out her name, and when no one answered, he vaulted out of bed in a panic, searching every room until he found her in the media lounge.
Bonnie was curled up in a beanbag chair, headphones on, awkwardly mashing the controller buttons to fight a boss monster.
Even in the dead of summer, Lawrence had broken out in a cold sweat. He walked over, wrapping his arms around her from behind, and pressed his lips against her neck. His voice trembled slightly. "Baby, what are you doing? You scared me to death. I thought you ran away and left me."
