Maybe he just went about it the wrong way.
His presence had still caused her distress.
"And Candie, I honestly never thought you'd ever be willing to acknowledge me again, let alone speak to me or hang out like we used to. Eating together, watching shows, feeding June... I couldn't even believe everything that happened these past few months in Oasinia was real."
It was a beautiful dream. Who would willingly wake up from it? He had simply been excruciatingly careful, trying to avoid anything that might jolt him back to reality.
Lawrence let out a heavy sigh. "Everything between us has felt like a mirage. What we see in front of us is just a reflection of those sweet, beautiful memories from the past. We're not platonic friends, and we aren't honest lovers, either. Just like you said, we can't pretend our past relationship never happened."
It was the desire that kept him going. How could it just vanish?
And how could he possibly hide his love and attachment whenever he was near her?
It was just too much to ask of him.
Lawrence slowly stepped closer. He wanted so badly to wrap his arms around her from behind again, but her head was bowed, and he couldn't tell if she was crying.
"I know the damage is done, and I can't pretend it didn't happen." Mustering his courage, he gently rested his hands on her shoulders. "But I will spend the rest of my life making up for it. I don't just love you for a moment; I love you for a lifetime. If I want to prove myself, I'll need a lifetime to show you."
"But whether you give me that chance will always be completely up to you. Candie, if you're willing to try again with me, I will do absolutely everything in my power to get us back to where we belong. Let me be the Lawrence you want to love, the one you want by your side. Please?"
They had both laid all their cards on the table tonight. The heavy, crushing burden that had weighed on his chest for so long finally vanished. Whatever she decided, he would accept it with grace.
Bonnie listened in complete silence. Finally, she turned around and looked him right in the eye. His eyes were red, brimming with tears. They had both ripped their hearts open, and both were crying.
