Taking advantage of the National Day holiday, Lawrence contacted a vet in Cabinda to have a custom set of braces made for June.
Just looking at the bill made Bonnie's teeth ache.
June was a goofy pup, and she absolutely hated wearing them. Every day, she’d bare her teeth in discomfort, which only made her look even more hilarious.
She refused to eat and constantly hid under the bed, leaving only half her butt sticking out. She wouldn't even wag her tail, a clear protest against Bonnie.
Bribes and threats did nothing. Ultimately, Lawrence had to take her to The Observatory for a few days so she could get through the initial adjustment period.
It frustrated Bonnie to no end. She claimed June was a traitor who clearly favored Lawrence.
Lawrence, on the other hand, smugly insisted that he and June had a special bond. If it hadn't been for the dog, he wouldn't have had nearly as many excuses to hang out with Bonnie in Oasinia.
As far as he was concerned, June was his savior.
Bonnie couldn't exactly argue with that logic.
To show his appreciation for the pup, Lawrence suggested they go hiking toward the end of the holiday break.
Bringing June along, of course.
It was his first official date request since they agreed to the three-month trial.
That night by the river, they had talked for hours, emptying out every ounce of emotional energy they had. When they finally finished, Lawrence had pulled her into a soft hug.
He didn't say a word.
A large damp patch was left on Bonnie's neck, and her hair was soaked with his tears.
When he finally dropped her off, she stood behind her bedroom curtains and watched him standing down below until every last light in the complex had gone out.
That night had been a major turning point. As for where they would end up, she had no idea.
Lawrence chuckled, lifting the glasses off the dog's head and sliding them onto Bonnie's face. "I gave her a stern talking to, and she knows she was wrong. Be the bigger person, don't hold a grudge against a puppy."
Bonnie adjusted the sunglasses, flashing a bright smile. "Let's go. Ridgeview Peak is pretty far."
Ridgeview Peak wasn't a huge tourist trap in Cabinda. There weren't massive crowds, making it a favorite spot for serious hikers to take in the autumn foliage.
It was a two-hour drive from her house.
Lawrence had stashed some snacks and drinks in the back of the SUV. Bonnie grabbed a few things for the passenger seat to munch on during the ride.
June sprawled across her lap, happily gnawing on the teething toy Lawrence had bought specifically for her braces phase.
Grimacing, Bonnie pulled out a few tissues and tucked them under the dog's drooling mouth to protect her pants.
June looked up, completely oblivious, before going right back to chewing. Bonnie burst out laughing, giving her head another scratch. "How are we supposed to hike with her? Won't she get tired?"
