The Highvale earthquake was a massive national headline. Various departments were rapidly responding, and as one of the leading architectural institutions in the country, Kingswood University had plenty of experience with post-disaster rebuilding. Forming a task force was standard procedure.
What Lawrence hadn't expected was for Bonnie to go. Perhaps she was worried about Dale's health.
He thought about it for a moment before typing his reply: [Are you sure? Have you already put your name down?]
Bonnie: [I want to go, but I haven't signed up yet. Dale asked in the group chat who wanted to join, and none of the seniors have replied. I'm just worried because he's still recovering, and the Highland Frontier might be too tough on his body.]
It was exactly what Lawrence had guessed, but since he wasn't Dale's student, he needed to approach this from Bonnie's perspective.
[Highvale is over 13,000 feet above sea level. You'll be dealing with hypoxia, freezing temperatures, ruined roads, and power and communication blackouts. The disaster zone magnifies all those issues. Candie, Highvale also has a lot of traditional Tibetan architecture and temples, so you'll have to navigate local religious sensitivities too. The work is going to be incredibly difficult.]
[Most importantly, seeing a disaster zone firsthand can cause severe psychological trauma. You need to think this through carefully.]
The indicator changed to "Bonnie is typing..." Lawrence waited patiently, half-listening to his parents talking with Jackson in the background.
Odette and Carl asked a few polite questions about Jasper's health but didn't pry any further.
Over the past three years, they had never once visited Hannah in prison. Ultimately, the things Hannah had said right before she was incarcerated had frozen their hearts.
They had poured their souls into raising her. Throughout her life, they had actually favored her, often at the expense of their own son, who had suffered silently because of it.
And who had nearly lost his life because of it.
Yet Hannah had claimed that all those years, she was just living under someone else's roof, forced to walk on eggshells.
Combine that with the unforgivable crimes she committed, and their relationship remained permanently fractured. Odette and Carl simply couldn't bring themselves to visit her.
Jackson turned a shade paler. He parted his lips, struggling for the right words. Odette and Carl exchanged a look and asked in unison, "What's wrong with Hannah? She's sick?"
"CIDP," Jackson forced out.
Odette paused. "What kind of illness is that? Is it serious?"
Choking on his words, Jackson explained, "It's a neurological disorder. The disease itself isn't usually fatal, but the complications are. The prison called me. Her condition is deteriorating rapidly, and she's completely refusing treatment."
Silence fell over the room as Odette and Carl turned their gaze toward the yard. Lawrence was standing sideways, one hand in his pocket, casually kicking a ball back and forth with Jasper and June while smiling as he talked to Bonnie on the phone.
They were beginning to guess why Jackson was really here.
"If she doesn't get treatment," Jackson continued, his voice breaking, "it could lead to severe muscle weakness, even paralysis. Ultimately, she could die from respiratory failure, or develop pneumonia or sepsis from being bedridden. Once it reaches that point... there's no saving her."
