Three Years Later, He Came Back Begging novel Chapter 40

Bonnie and Felton were drenched from the rain. She didn’t have any men’s slippers around, but it wasn’t like Felton planned on staying anyway.

He couldn't stop checking his phone. From the elevator to her apartment, his phone rang five times.

Bonnie tucked her wet hair behind her ear, grabbed a large umbrella from the shoe cabinet, and handed it to Felton. “Go. Don’t keep her waiting.”

For some reason, Felton’s heart jolted when she said that. Lying had never been his strong suit. Now, caught off guard, his face turned red.

“I’m not lying to you. It’s my ex… She came to Cabinda and somehow found out I’m going on dates. She’s really not handling it well. I…”

He glanced at Bonnie, searching her face like he was hoping for some sign of understanding. “I’m not that kind of guy. I meant it when I said I wanted a fresh start. I’m not seeing anyone else. But she has nowhere to go here, refuses to book a hotel, and she’s waiting downstairs at my building right now. It’s pouring. Even as a friend, I can’t just… I can’t just leave her there…”

Bonnie smiled, gentle but distant, and pushed the umbrella more firmly into his hands. “I get it. Be careful on your way.”

Felton met her gaze. Her eyes were so calm, still, like deep water. He lost any words he’d thought he might say. After a second, he just nodded, looking defeated. “I’ll deal with it. Don’t worry.”

Bonnie smiled again and closed the door behind him.

Felton ran his hand through his hair, then turned and pressed the elevator button. As soon as the doors opened, he stepped inside in a rush.

The other elevator reached the floor at the same time, and Felton caught sight of someone’s back as they walked away, completely soaked. Black clothes, a tall, broad-shouldered build, something about the figure looked familiar.

He didn’t have time to dwell on it. His phone rang again. This time, he answered, and a woman’s crying burst through the line, mixed with the sound of heavy rain, making his throat tighten.

“I’m coming now, please stop crying.”

His chest felt tight. He hung up as he hurried through the building’s entrance, hurrying to his car in the temporary lot. Parked beside a black sedan, one of the security guards was shining a flashlight at the car window.

Felton didn’t slow down. He climbed into his own car and drove away.
