"Oh my gosh, June, you are such a menace!" she squeaked, narrowly avoiding a face-plant straight into the toilet bowl.
Poking his head out from the kitchen, Lawrence called out, "June, come to Daddy. Leave Mommy alone. Daddy's got a special treat for you."
June immediately abandoned his post, trotting eagerly toward the kitchen to gorge on a deluxe feast of pasta, broccoli, carrots, boiled chicken, and egg yolks.
Dry dog food was for peasants.
Still brushing her teeth, she wandered into the kitchen and wrapped her arms around his waist from behind. Flipping an egg in the pan, he tilted his head to drop a kiss onto her forehead.
"What's on your agenda for today?" he asked casually.
There was no way she was ruining the surprise. Playing it cool, she claimed she was just going to lounge around the house. He didn't press the issue, merely patting the back of her hand. "Do you want me to swing by during lunch to cook for you?"
"No, that's too much of a hassle," she mumbled past the toothbrush. "I'm just going to order some ridiculously unhealthy takeout."
He chuckled softly. "Alright then. I'll make the braised fish tonight, and maybe whip up some tomato and beef brisket stew."
Nodding in agreement, she released her hold on him and returned to the bathroom to finish getting ready.
After breakfast, he changed into his work clothes and headed for the door. Standing in the entryway, he raised an expectant brow at her. She blew him an exaggerated air-kiss from across the room, basically shooing him out.
A scoff of pure disbelief escaped him. "Alright. The thirty-year-old is officially going to work. Try to miss me, twenty-eight-year-old."
Biting the inside of her cheek to suppress a grin, she gave him a casual nod.
With a heavy sigh, he pushed the door open and left.
Whatever. If she forgot, she forgot. It wasn't like birthdays were mandatory.
The absolute second the lock clicked into place, she collapsed onto the sofa, completely losing it. Tears of laughter streamed down her face as she clutched her stomach.
Once she finally collected herself, she got dressed, clipped on June's leash, and headed out. But instead of taking their usual route around the neighborhood block, she steered them toward a different street entirely.
At precisely 5:30 PM, Lawrence left the office.
He was in a foul mood.
After a brief second of consideration, he grabbed three more boxes.
By 6:20 PM, he pulled into his neighborhood. The Heritage Villa was always buzzing with life, filled with the loud, vibrant chatter of locals and the mouth-watering aroma of home-cooked meals wafting through the halls.
As he climbed the stairs between the first and second floors, a particularly savory scent caught his attention. Reaching his front door, he realized the smell was coming from his own apartment.
Hell had officially frozen over. His girlfriend had actually cooked dinner for him!
A faint, involuntary smile tugged at the corner of his lips. Pressing his thumb against the scanner, the lock beeped, and he pushed the door open.
The apartment was pitch black. The curtains were drawn shut, swallowing all the light.
A second later, the warm, flickering glow of candlelight flared to life.
June let out a happy bark, his tail wagging furiously to welcome his owner home. From across the dark room, Bonnie's voice rang out, practically dripping with a teasing smile.
"Welcome home, thirty-year-old Lawrence~"
