The song looped in silence for the rest of the ride. Bonnie kept her face turned slightly toward the window, but out of the corner of her eye, Lawrence's presence was impossible to ignore.

She had never been good at talking to people, especially boys, so sharing the music was a perfect buffer for the heavy tension between them.

Lawrence couldn't find a natural opening to say anything else, either. When they reached her stop, he handed the earbud back and followed her off the bus. He kept a respectful distance behind her—far enough that no nosy neighbors would get the wrong idea if they saw them together.

Just before turning into her neighborhood, Bonnie paused and looked back at him. Lawrence raised a hand and waved. The streetlights were too dim to read his expression, just as he couldn't tell if she was smiling.

Once she disappeared from view, Lawrence looked down and kicked the edge of the curb in frustration.
