Bonnie was still too young to picture what that future would look like. More than that, she doubted she would ever be capable of being anyone's rock.

To be her mother's support—to stand up and speak for her when she was isolated, to give her a warm hug when she was wronged.

Bonnie had no idea if she would ever grow to be that strong.

Still, just hearing Lawrence's voice washed the lingering gloom away. These family issues were just a dull ache she was used to carrying; she had merely needed a lifeline, someone to listen.

And because that someone was Lawrence, she bounced back much faster than she expected.

Now that the suffocating feeling had passed, a delayed wave of embarrassment washed over her.

"Thank you for keeping me company," Bonnie said, her voice sounding a little stiff. "If you have things to do, you really don't need to worry about me."

Lawrence chuckled softly. "What could I possibly be busy with? I'm perfectly happy making time just to talk to you."

"Weren't you about to have a snowball fight?" Bonnie crouched down, scooping up a handful of pristine snow and packing it into a tight ball. She couldn't help but add, "It's freezing."

"Wait, are you outside?" Lawrence's tone instantly sharpened with concern. "Don't freeze to death out there. Go home. The streets are completely dead on Christmas Eve. Be careful."

Bonnie stood up and stomped her numb feet against the pavement. She dreaded the thought of going back inside. She stayed silent, and after a long, agonizing pause, Lawrence suddenly blurted out, "Where are you? Can I come find you?"

The question made Bonnie's heart do a wild flip, sending a strange, sweet rush through her veins. But logic quickly slammed the brakes on the fantasy. "Absolutely not! If... if Odette finds out, we're both dead..."

Lawrence let out a muffled laugh, realizing how reckless the idea was. Yet, her panicked, breathless reaction was hopelessly endearing.
