After what felt like an eternity, she let out a broken sigh, clicked on his profile, and hit delete.
She changed her phone password to a random string of numbers Shirley would never guess, powered the device down, and braced herself. Walking into the master bedroom, she handed the phone over to her mother.
Shirley took it without a second glance and tossed it into her nightstand drawer.
"Go study. School starts tomorrow. I want your mind completely focused on your academics. Once you're in college, I won't care who you spend your time with. But right now, your one and only priority is getting into a top-tier university. Do you understand?"
Bonnie nodded, her voice barely a whisper. "I understand."
She would never dare step out of line again.
...
Lawrence came back from a grueling run, hopped in the shower, and instinctively reached for his phone while toweling off his hair. Normally, this was the time of night Bonnie had a few spare minutes to chat.
But there were no unread notifications. Not thinking much of it, he typed out a quick text: [Are you done studying?]
The next second, a harsh red exclamation mark slammed into his vision, plunging into his chest like a serrated blade.
Bonnie had deleted him.
Lawrence stood frozen, the towel still suspended over his wet hair, completely paralyzed by the shock. His mind short-circuited. He had no idea what went wrong.
Everything had been perfect. Why would she just cut him off?
Did he say something stupid? Was it because he joked about her stickers being dorky yesterday? Or because he replied a little late the day before?
He racked his brain, analyzing every single interaction, but nothing justified her suddenly ghosting him.
An agonizing knot twisted in his chest. He paced frantically around his room, staring at his phone, consumed by the desperate urge to sprint over to her house and demand an answer. But the moment his hand touched the doorknob, he froze.
A chilling realization hit him. What if Shirley found out they were talking? What if she forced Bonnie to delete him?
